Visiting New Zealand today, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced that President Trump has asked him to move forward with efforts to “rebuild” the US diplomatic relationship with Russia, which he described as currently “at a low point and deteriorating.” According to Tillerson, Trump wants to say the US-Russia relationship stabilize, and for trust to be rebuilt. He added that Trump insisted that the allegations surrounding election hacking by Russia mustn’t be allowed to impede the attempts to restore diplomatic ties. This interest is not new, and indeed President Trump made normalization of ties with Russia a major part of his 2016 election campaign. Virtually nothing positive has happened on that front since Trump’s inauguration, however. If anything, the Trump Administration had given the appearance in the past few months that the Russia rapprochement was wholly forgotten, with officials repeatedly insisting that there are no intentions of lifting US sanctions against Russia. This also comes less than a week after former State Department officials had bragged about derailing previous Trump efforts to normalize US-Russia ties, however, so it may well be that such intentions have been around for awhile, and they’re just trying to make something happen in the face of continuing opposition from people more comfortable with the US and Russia remaining enemies. Don't know if you'd call an analyst an "operative", but perhaps when he was in charge of the Dresden station he did more than just look at reports. This year, the head of a small Orthodox church in the Nizhny Novgorod region of central Russia declared that myrrh had begun to seep from a picture of Putin. "Putin is a new way for Russia," said a statement on the church's website. "In one of his past lives he was Count Vladimir who baptized Rus [Russia] and now Vladimir Vladimirovich will have to baptize our pagan country!" A recent survey by the independent Levada Center polling agency found that a quarter of high school-educated women between the ages of 25 and 39 said they would like to marry Putin. The Russian leader's exploits are well-known. Over the last few years, he has been shown flying a combat jet, driving a race car, riding a horse shirtless, tagging a polar bear and shooting a dart into a gray whale with a crossbow for purposes of scientific research. He dived to the bottom of the Black Sea and emerged with a couple of ancient amphorae. The Kremlin later acknowledged that the large jars had been planted there by what it said were over-enthusiastic assistants. I was in a gun shop many years ago in suburban Chicago. While in there, I met this fellow who had moved here from Russia. He was looking to fulfill his new found freedoms by purchasing a firearm, which was something that would have never been allowed in his home country. This morning I was watching Stossel on cable. There was a Russian there who was speaking about finding new freedoms here in the U.S. Yes, we here in the United States enjoy many freedoms other peoples of the world can only imagine.
