Says He Is 'Not Aware' of US Joining Fight for Marawi

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has made a top priority of his foreign policy establishing a strong measure of autonomy compared to the nation’s traditional dependence on the US, and the sudden news of US forces becoming involved in the siege of Marawi has raised a lot of eyebrows.

Duterte, for his part, says he “never approached America” for military support in the offensive, and that he was “not aware of that until they arrived” in the area on the southern island on Mindanao, which has been placed under martial law since the local ISIS affiliate seized the city of Marawi.

Duterte has publicly called for the expulsion of US forces from the Philippines in the past, but the nation’s military has a close relationship with the Pentagon. This has raised speculation that the military went around Duterte and approached the US directly on support for the offensive.

Philippines military officials insist that there are no US “boots on the ground” in the city itself, and that the US involvement so far is purely “technical assistance.” It’s not clear if that’s going to remain the case, particularly if the local ISIS affiliate continues to grow in influence across the nation’s always unstable Muslim regions.

Tactical assistance, my ass.

There is a name for this. When the military goes against the orders of the President. I am drawing a blank right now. Can anyone help?

I know if this happened in the U.S., it might be called treason. ;)

The Philippines is not the only country with a treasonous military. The South Korean military recently sneakily installed a US missile system without the knowledge and approval of the peacenik president.

Pentagon has more control over US foreign policy than POTUS.

You are talking about THAAD and Obummer? Was he really a peacenik? ;)

You might try mutiny.

It's become SOP for the entire military industrial complex and our "intelligence" apparatus as well.

It is all seriously out of control and has been for quite some time.

I reckon so.

Besides that, what is Jared Kushner doing making an arms deal with the Saudi's?

That was always the domain of a Bird Colonel in the Pentagon. I knew one back in the 70s, Col. Donn de Grand Pre. He was vying to be the world's leading arms merchant.

After the 2nd attempt on Gerald Ford's life, Ford said, "It is getting so that the President cannot walk among the people."

The Colonel retired to his farm in Virginia and started looking into what was going on. His first book was "Barbarians Inside the Gates". (out of print)

She sent me some copies of his books for the cost of postage. I had some previously and was selling them online when I lived in Lebanon.

I talk with his wife a few years back and she told me he passed away the previous January. He started out as a radio operator in Burma during WW II. That was a pretty good rise in the ranks. ;)

We have had no peacenik presidents for a long time. I was referring to the newly-elected president of South Korea, Moon, who would like reconciliation with the North. The US, of course, does not want this to happen.

Yes, and it boggles the mind to think what Korea would be like if that happened. ;)
