Eight people were found dead Sunday morning inside an 18-wheeler in the parking lot of a Walmart store in San Antonio, city police and fire officials said. A total of 38 people had been inside the tractor-trailer, including two school-age children, authorities said. Twenty people were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, and another eight had “less critical” injuries. The vehicle did not have a working air conditioning system, authorities said. Authorities were first alerted by a store employee who called the police after being approached by someone from the truck who was asking for water. “Late last night we got a call from a Walmart employee about a welfare check in a tractor-trailer that was parked in the lot here,” Police Chief William McManus said. According to police, surveillance video from the store showed "a number of vehicles" picking up people who survived the trip that were inside the trailer. Some people fled into the woods, and police will conduct another search in the morning, the chief said. The driver of the vehicle, who was not identified, has been taken into custody, authorities said. “We’re looking at human trafficking crime here this evening,” McManus said. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is also looking into the incident. The origin of the truck is still unknown. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel will investigate after those needing medical attention have been treated, authorities said.

I wonder what the penalty for human trafficking is today? I think maybe a felony with that many in the car. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — At least nine people died after being crammed into a sweltering tractor-trailer found parked outside a Walmart in the midsummer Texas heat, authorities said Sunday in what they described as an immigrant-smuggling attempt gone wrong.
The driver was arrested, and nearly 20 others rescued from the rig were hospitalized in dire condition, many with extreme dehydration and heatstroke, officials said.
“We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” Police Chief William McManus said. He called it “a horrific tragedy.”
It was just the latest smuggling-by-truck operation to end in tragedy. In one of the worst cases on record in the U.S., 19 immigrants locked inside a stifling rig died in Victoria, Texas, in 2003.
Based on initial interviews with survivors of the weekend tragedy, more than 100 people may have been packed into the back of the 18-wheeler at some point in its journey, ICE acting Director Thomas Homan said.
Thirty-nine were inside when rescuers arrived, and the rest were believed to have escaped or hitched rides to their next destination, officials said.
Hours later, after daybreak, a helicopter hovered over the area, and investigators were still gathering evidence from the tractor-trailer, which had an Iowa license plate and was registered to Pyle Transportation Inc. of Schaller, Iowa. A company official did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Maybe they had a trailer stolen from somewhere. That is the only explanation. ;) which had an Iowa license plate and was registered to Pyle Transportation Inc. of Schaller, Iowa.

I assumed they were locked in overnight or something. I heard on the news that local cameras caught more than a few of them getting picked up by several vehicles. I can't understand why the rest of them weren't treated like human beings. I hate reading this outrageous story.

Otherwise they would not have remained in there and willingly died like cockroaches. I assumed they were locked in overnight or something.

The coyote is always paid in advance. I have no idea why these people were left there to die in that hot trailer. Maybe the person who agreed to pick them up backed out at the last minute. It happens. ;) under threat of life until the coyote got paid for delivery, or something involving extortion of money. That would explain them being there for so long. ;) A lot of times the coyotes are not paid in advance. Many times they bring people across and then hold them until relatives bring them the fee.
