A woman who had been battling blood cancer for five years has experienced an extraordinary recovery after taking a natural treatment based on a kitchen staple.

Dieneke Ferguson, 67, thought she had exhausted all options available after undergoing three rounds of chemotherapy and four stem cell transplants as she battled myeloma.

However, she then turned to a product called curcumin, which is an ingredient of the spice turmeric, and her recovery was so incredible it has been featured in the British Medical Journal.

Although curcumin features in kitchen turmeric, it only makes up around 2%, so Dieneke takes the ingredient in tablet form so she can get 8g a day.

After five years of taking the tablet, that she heard about on a cancer support group, her cancer cell count is negligible.

Curcumin tablets are not prescribed by the NHS and Dieneke, who lives in North London, pays £50 for a ten day supply from an Indian company called Sabinsa.

However, it cannot be prescribed without large-scale trials, which would cost millions for little financial return.

Despite the absence of large scale trials a number of medical professionals remain convinced by its benefits.

Angus Dalgleish, a professor of cancer at St George’s Hospital in South London, researched it on his patients and told the Daily Mail a lack of funding for research had prevented more from benefitting from curcumin.

A recent trial at the University of Leicester involving 28 bowel cancer patients showed promising results encouraging the use of it in bigger trials.

But it has been cautioned that the success of the spice in helping Dieneke should not raise hopes of a miracle cure.

Jamie Cavenagh, who co-authored the British Medical Journal report told the Daily Mail that a lot of his patients take it at different stages but that it doesn’t work for everyone.

‘Dieneke’s is the best response I have observed and it is clear-cut because we had stopped all other treatment. I have not seen such a convincing response before.’ he added.

What is myeloma?

Myeloma occurs when white blood cells in bone marrow multiply uncontrollably and stop producing the antibodies needed to fight infection.

Although it can be slowed by drugs it is incurable and most sufferers do not live beyond five years.

The British Medical Journal report states that few if any of the myeloma sufferers who take the turmeric ingredient do so instead of standard therapy.

It said Dieneke’s case was the first report of curcumin having an objective response on a progressive disease without conventional treatment. The report recommends further study to work out its impact in myeloma patients.

Best to blend it with other ingredients. 2) Resveratrol (from red grapes) 3) Curcumin but you should take black pepper with it as pepper increases the activity of curcumin by 2,000%.
