After spending hours the other night reading the Clown Posse website, my computer has come down with all sorts of problems, I can hardly type now as the letters take a lot of time to appear after I type.

My computer is running very slow, and the curser is turning into double arrows and in general, this computer is now trashed.

I'm not going to have a computer or internet for awhile, as I need to send this in to get fixed which takes weeks. This happened to me before after visiting the Clown Posse site to read. I don't know much about computer technology, it could just be coincidence that after reading CP a couple of times my computer becomes practically unusable.

I'll be checking in from time to time on friend's computers but probably not much. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

If you have a high speed connection, you may want to consider Tor/Privoxy as a means to keep yourself more or less hidden. I am not running it now, but have in the past with good results. If you are on dial-up, forget it, as Tor/Privoxy will bog the connection down. With high speed, noticable, but not THAT noticable.

Anti-virus: I am not a big fan of either McAfee or Norton and it depends on who you ask in general. I have heard more good than bad about AVG. Avast! is good. Avast! is free and I think AVG is as well. Also Panda and Trend Micro- though I know nothing about those two other than hearing the name.

Software Firewall: Windows XP comes with one but it is best to leave it turned off. Norton comes with one though I have seen it cripple systems. Zone Alarm is among the most popular as it offers a free download. And again, Panda, McAfee offer firewalls along with anti-virus. I have heard good things about Kaspersky and used it at one time. You have to pay for it and the user interface takes getting used to.

I tried installing Avast! and Zone Alarm on a family member's computer about 6 months ago. The two did not get along. I was in a bit of a rush attempting to do that and did not have the time to resolve the issue. Since Avast! has a "web shield" that can act as a firewall, I simply disabled Zone Alarm. They have had no complaints and since they rarely visit sites that will bite them and never download unknown extensions from emails, I feel OK with them just on Avast!.

Browser: Firefox and keep it updated. As it has grown in popularity, it has become more of a target and it has holes. The good thing about it being open source is the community is on top of it and gets patches out very quickly. I keep IE updated and I only use it when I have to. IE 7 is in beta and we will see how that one comes along.

Anti-Spyware: I like Windows Defender. Microsoft bought out a smaller company and were marketing this as Microsoft Antipsyware (bullseye icon) for all of last year. Great product. It has been renamed Windows Defender. Good prodcut. Ad-aware is good. Spybot Search and Destroy is good.

Some of these products I mentioned you have to pay for. I think all offer some kind of trial period. If you find a good product(s) that keeps you relativley safe on the Net, it may very well be woth it to fork over the $$$$ to keep that program. I personally think it is.

And yes, from time to time, do go through the hassle of Windows Updates.

I ditched ZA, in favor of Avast!, V-Catch, SpySweeper and some other compatible programs.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ is a great, free diagnostic, and repair, tool.

Interestingly, the only way I was able to view and sign onto ClownPosse was through Tor. When I went naked, I gave their server an IP error. Never had any malware probs there. I used to have periodic problems associated with LP, though.
