After spending hours the other night reading the Clown Posse website, my computer has come down with all sorts of problems, I can hardly type now as the letters take a lot of time to appear after I type.

My computer is running very slow, and the curser is turning into double arrows and in general, this computer is now trashed.

I'm not going to have a computer or internet for awhile, as I need to send this in to get fixed which takes weeks. This happened to me before after visiting the Clown Posse site to read. I don't know much about computer technology, it could just be coincidence that after reading CP a couple of times my computer becomes practically unusable.

I'll be checking in from time to time on friend's computers but probably not much. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

This isn't even my computer

Buy a couple of computers. That way, you have a clear backup.

If you've got malware, go download Hijack this! (hijackthis!) and spend some time on Google with the Hijack this related forums. I have got to run and will get back to this later on tonight.

Fortunately, my PC was hit by lightning last summer. Now I use Macs both at home and at work.

I too an a dedicated Mac user. My story is a little different - I used PC's for years, first DOS, then Windows 3.1, then Windows 95, then Windows 98, then 98SE, and always having problems, all of the time. Got used to the idea of having to work on my machine daily, trying to keep it running, spending an hour to get it to where it would work well enough to get a day's work in on it. Then, I bought a new Sony Vaio that came with Windows ME on it, and that broke my spine. It quite literally sent me running screaming into the Apple camp, where I've been ever since.

Microsoft products are now banished from my life and my home. Any company that would sell me a product as completely awful as Windows ME is not a company that anyone should do business with. I will not put up with their products any longer, not one little tiny bit. I simply decided to give up being a masochist. When people tell me about their computer problems, I always ask "so, you running Windows?" Of course they always answer "yes", and then I tell them to get a Mac.

Gold and silver are real money, paper is but a promise.

Good advice.

I ditched ZA, in favor of Avast!, V-Catch, SpySweeper and some other compatible programs.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ is a great, free diagnostic, and repair, tool.

I don't like repair tools.

They will sometimes reconfigure and in most cases collapse your OS's default settings to that of it's propietary program leaving you as the user in the dark as to what it did.

Best advice.

Learn your OS or get someone with advance skills to fix your problems.

I've read many places that ME sent many folks running and screaming to another OS - for some reason, I skipped that one and am pretty well happy with the XP incantation of microsloth...no blue screens of death, no unallowed - not quite like my refrigerator, but plenty stable.

Knock on wood.

Do you know what XP means?

I'll give you a hint.

Gates hussled the shit out of millions and millions of people over this OS.

If Bill Gates can't learn his OS, why should I try?

Most all the repair sites that I've found have layers of confirmation dialogue to be sure that you know what is going to be done, and to be sure that this is your wish for your machine.

I will confess to "declining" many of the proferred repairs.

you may want to consider Tor/Privoxy

Interestingly, the only way I was able to view and sign onto ClownPosse was through Tor. When I went naked, I gave their server an IP error. Never had any malware probs there. I used to have periodic problems associated with LP, though.

no blue screens of death

I have seen plenty of blue screens of death with XP, too many. Their OS is still bug plauged. Their new one will be as well.

Huh!

I'm sorry to learn this, RJ. My box is a redone Fry's HP/Comrap $499 deal that has nothing but good for me...it is the ONLY one that I've ever owned that did right.

Best of luck on whatever you choose next.

Cheers.

I'm not the only one, believe me. I have to use Windows OS's because I write Windows .NET applications at work. As a professional user I guess I do stress their OS in many ways that casual users don't, but I am not making up the fact that XP does crash a lot. No, it doesn't crash as frequently as their previous OS's but it is still a pain in the butt. There is hardly any commercial software out there that doesn't have bugs. The product I'm working on now has over 800 known bugs and it is only half finished. As long as it works for the majority of users in a reasonable manner, it will be pushed out the door; most all software companies are like that.

I have had to use hijackthis before for a malware issue that my wife imparted to our machine via IE. God bless her. She uses Firefox now. Word of warning before I watch the second half of dook - UNC, read, read, read the forums related to hijackthis before you use it. It scans the Windows Registry and displays a print out. You check the scan results for oddities and can use hijack this to remove those oddities. Obviously, you can wreck a system quickly by deleting the wrong key. That is why you have to read, read, read first.

I know where you are coming from. However, 90 some odd percent of the world is running on Windows products. People can't or won't migrate over to Linux or Mac. If they did, Linux and Mac would be the new targets and we would be right back to where we are now with Windows.

Try going over to http://www.pcpitstop.com for a free check- up and repair.

I went there and downloaded the program to detect spyware which took some time, then when I clicked on it to run the program, the window popped up again for me to download the program which I already did, so I x'ed out of there, clicked on the program to run but again that window where it was already downloaded popped up.

I can't get it to run, but then again fixing computers is far from my strong point. I don't know what to do next, I'm caught in a circle with trying to run that program which I already downloaded but wants to download again when I click run. Pain in the ass. Curses upon whoever did this.

That program I tried to run after downloading but couldn't said you have to have active x. I don't know what it is though.

activeX is subroutines in windows to allow embedded sounds, video, and other multimedia type features, but it is really easy to attack computers using it, so most people disable it. People I know anyway. :)

Do you guys know if it's possible to get your computer trashed from going to certain sites?

Yes.

It's called MALWARE.

Malicious software from certain sites will automatically install themselves on your puter.

Malware will hijack your system making it impossible to function.

Most spyware progs won't isolate these trojans so it's imperitave you format the H/D and reload windows.

If your H/D registery is affected you may need to purchase a new H/D.

I just had to sign back in to respond to this post.

Thankyou for the advice, nothing is working right on here it's really trashed. I hope one of these days someone sues or arrests whoever it is over there who does this kind of thing, purposefully wrecking lurker's computers.

This computer has Norton but it appears the hackers can get past that.

Well stated.

Unless you are performing intensive work ( as I do on some computers ) they need not touch the internet for any reason. My computers are immune from viruses as they just work logic as in Mentor Graphics, OrCad and FPGA design using several models.

My machines are behind other hardware firewalls. Expensive, of course. But thats why I am paid the BIG_BUCKS.

Now- we can continue this pissing match if you wish. We can even nit pick and talk about how Windows is not the most popular OS in existence (iTRON). I am not by any means a shill for Microsoft. But the reality is people run Windows, a lot of them. As such, it is a targeted OS for people to attack and exploit. I can either help when things go wrong with Windows or ridicule people.
