What do the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Top 50 all-time Billboard Country artists, and Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Artists have in common? Jerry Lee Lewis is part of each one. Without Jerry Lee Lewis Rock N’ Roll would not be the same. What an honor it was to get to see this living legend. What made this show extra special was it was on Lewis’s 82nd Birthday and also 2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of his hit “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.” The show opened with a set from Lewis’s sister Linda Gail Lewis with his band followed by a few songs from the band before “The Killer” came out.
At 82, Jerry Lewis still plays with the same enthusiasm he did over 50 years ago and there really is nothing like seeing this icon live in concert. Before Lewis took the stage there was a video of various interviews from contemporaries like Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips to artists he influenced like Don Henley and John Fogerty all taking about his importance and what made him unique. Although the set was just 30 minutes, Lewis rocked like he did 60 years ago and played songs including a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” and “Great Balls of Fire.” The show ended after “Great Balls Of Fire,” when a cake was brought out and the audience sang happy birthday. Lewis came out and shook hands with audience members in the front before exiting the stage.
Jerry Lee Lewis is one of the last surviving pioneers of early Rock N’ Roll and the last surviving member of Sun Record’s Million Dollar Quartet which included, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins.
