I don't doubt that most gold sold on eBay is fake. No one can afford to sell common gold coins, rounds, and bars on eBay because of the extremely high 10% selling fees plus the about 3% PayPal fees. That premium if far more (more than double) than a seller pays to sell to APMEX and others. And, buyers on eBay will not pay more than they price on APMEX and other gold dealers. The difference between buy and sell price on APMEX and other competitive dealers is about 5%. No intelligent person will pay an extra 8% to sell on eBay, when unlike APMEX, a buyer is not even guaranteed.

Of course, is they are selling fake gold, the selling fees don't much matter since it's almost all profit. Also, they know they cannot sell fake gold to APMEX and other gold dealers.

He didn't explain what material it was made of. Perhaps it's lead. But tungsten has almost the same specific weight as gold, so if anyone was selling tungsten ingots as gold, this check he suggests people do not reveal it.

Ebay should be on top of this in a heartbeat. And if they are coming from China, "gold" imports from China should be banned.

China has been taken in by the same hoax with 400 oz gold bars.

Tungsten is indeed the culprit in this instance. It can be easily substituted for gold because of the closeness of its atomic weight.

And yes, eBay needs to check into where the phony gold was obtained and file complaints with the authorities for mail fraud (if sent by Postal Service) among other charges. ;)
