Conservative MP Christopher Chope attended talks in Brussels with MPs from the Brexit Select Committee including Labours Hilary Benn. The British MPs met EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier, and MEP Guy Verhofstadt, who represents the European Parliament in Brexit talks. Mr Chope had been optimistic for the meetings after Theresa Mays Government seemed to be making progress in Brexit talks. But the meetings made him realise there was no way the EU will ever allow Britain a good deal - so talks will ultimately be pointless. Writing for Brexit Central, he said: The only withdrawal deal on offer from the EU would require the UK to agree to the EUs demands without any guarantee of being able to secure a reasonable future trade deal on terms better than the WTO. He blasted the bloc for pushing Britain to agree to hefty financial demands including a 60 billion divorce bill, only to refuse to give way on any of Britains most-needed concessions. Mr Chope said: The EU wants to require the UK to agree to its financial demands, to accept that every EU citizen resident in the UK has the right to live in the UK forever and for that right to be extended to parents and children. The EU would also make remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union a pre- requisite to having a frictionless border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Eurotunnel will be blocked for SEVEN YEARS if EU won't budge on Brexit German MEP rages at Barnier for 'unfair' Brexit strategy towards UK Writing for Brexit Central, he said: The only withdrawal deal on offer from the EU would require the UK to agree to the EUs demands without any guarantee of being able to secure a reasonable future trade deal on terms better than the WTO. The EU would also make remaining in the Single Market and Customs Union a pre- requisite to having a frictionless border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. To add insult to injury, the EUs negotiators are insisting that any future trade relationship should be made conditional upon a whole raft of protectionist and anti-competitive requirements which would severely handicap the UKs freedom to negotiate genuine free trade deals with the rest of the world. The long-serving MP, who has been in politics since 1983, said he did not believe EU officials when they insisted they do not want to punish Britain for leaving the organisation. He pointed out the insistence on huge Brexit payouts coupled with blocking a good deal indicated Britain was set for a punishing deal that would act as a deterrent for other countries weighing up whether they should leave the EU. It comes as a bombshell survey shows half of Conservative members say Theresa May should immediately declare she will walk away from the EU with no deal. Leading Brexiteers argue this would allow the UK to negotiate free trade agreements across the globe. Poster Comment: Videos at source. EU threatening to block Chunnel for 7 years.
