A team of researchers from Sweden’s Uppsala University has linked dog ownership to longer life. In a study, published Friday in the journal Scientific Reports, the team lists a whole host of reasons why owning a Fido or Lassie could be beneficial to your health.

Specifically, the scientists found that canine fans had a greatly reduced risk of cardiovascular disease compared to their dog-shy counterparts, during the 12-year period studied. They posit that this has something to do with the amount of exercise, from walking their companions for example, or playing fetch in the park, dog owners get.

Though it also may be a case of more active people choosing to own a dog over their couch potato peers. In addition, the benefits for dog-loving singletons are clear.

“A very interesting finding in our study was that dog ownership was especially prominent as a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group reported previously to be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death than those living in a multi-person household. Perhaps a dog may stand in as an important family member in the single households,”wrote study author Mwenya Mubanga.

Read more Sacrifice for humanity: 60yrs since heroic death of pioneering Soviet space dog Laika “The results showed that single dog owners had a 33 percent reduction in risk of death and 11 percent reduction in risk of myocardial infarction during follow-up compared to single non-owners,” Mubanga added.

Another interesting facet of the study is that the breed of dog chosen had differing degrees of cardiovascular disease risk. For example, those who owned dogs originally bred for hunting, such as terriers, retrievers and scent hounds, had the lowest risk of the disorder.

Other explanations for the decreased risk, according to lead researcher Tove Fall, include “an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome in the owner.”

For the study the team examined the data of more than 3.4 million Swedes, aged 40-80, from 2001 to 2012. Every visit to a hospital is recorded in national databases in Sweden, and dog owners have had to register their pets since 2001.

Looked after friend's dog while she was in hospital for a month. Had been having a couple of long bouts of tachychardia each month but only a couple of shorts of a few minutes in October when I came in to feed the dog with treats that took several hours to prepare and which the dog was enthusiastic about. Only at the end of the month when my friend returned home that I experienced a 24-hour arrhythmia. Its absence earlier may have been due to the good weather, no storm fronts passing, may have been due to extra chocolate (Danish Study) that I ate, or maybe Doc Perky had a paw in it's alleviation...so just associating with a dog in a friendly way may be beneficial to one's health.

Good information, thank you.

The time spent caring for your friend's pooch had you concentrating on it for those hours, and not on yourself. Prolly why most care facilities today have therapy animals for their patients. The animals are a wonderful distraction.

You're right I concentrated on planning for Perky rather than anxiety-producing eventualities. My friend seemed also be aware that being at home with her dog, being active around the house, would more effectively remove concussion accumulations of blood in her brain than being in a hosipital bed most of the day. So she escaped, managing to make it home on public transit. But in a few hours the police arrived and took her back into hospital care. Somewhat ironic because over a half century ago her Chang Ky Shek army father escaped China with family to Taiwan just to avoid Mao's police from taking them to a communist re-education camp. Little did she expect that in free-society Canada police would yank her out of her house to be placed under lock and key in a hospital ward. All of which could have been most likely avoided had she wore a helmet before crashing/being knocked off her bicycle on the street.
