Yahoo...owners now have scientific data to back them in the eternal debate over whether dogs really are smarter than cats.

A study led by a Vanderbilt University professor counted for the first time the number of cortical neurons in the brains of cats and dogs and found that dogs possess nearly double the amount of neurons compared to cats.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University found that dogs have 530 million neurons in their cerebral cortex, while cats have only half that amount, or around 250 million.

"Whatever species has the most neurons in the cerebral cortex is therefore expected to be capable of more complex and flexible behavior, said Herculano-Houzel, who gave the disclaimer she is "100 percent a dog person." "We humans have twice the cortical neurons that gorillas have; dogs, as we found out, have about twice the cortical neurons that cats have."

The number of neurons in an animal also determines the “richness of their internal mental state and their ability to predict what is about to happen … based on past experience,” researchers said.

The research was accepted this week for publication in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy.

Researchers also found that the brain of a golden retriever has more neurons than the striped hyena, African lion and brown bear, even though a brown bear has a cortex up to three times larger than a dog.

Maybe so but dogs have to work for a living, guard house, warn away intruders while cats freeload during their stay.

Nah,dogs are needy and like to suck up. Cats only pretend to care what you think about them when they are hungry or want something.

They are a lot like women, but don't nag,and you generally can't count on women to kill anything but you.

Not true. I have had my cats catch and kill poisonous snakes in my house and in my workshop.

Not to mention mice.

If there is ANYTHING alive inside your house, your house cat knows what it is and where it is.

My brief experience with friend's dogs indicates behavior depends on treats given. Gave first dog treats to preclude his loud barking; would start quietly waiting for me while I was still miles away.

Second dog for whom I'd spent hours preparing meat and veggie mix to add to the dry stuff would obediently go in the direction I pointed. My friend is a great dog trainer.

Man domesticated dogs but cats domesticated themselves--they stay with you on their own terms.

I heard that the Egyptians domesticated cats after they were unsuccessful with using snakes to protect their stored grain. Before cats, they lost over a third of their grain to rodents. I suspect the cats domesti-cat-ed the Egyptians after leading the rats to grain.

Great observations, thanks.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

. Before cats, they lost over a third of their grain to rodents.

Small wonder, then, that the Egyptians made gods of them.
