The danger of this is if the tooth doesn't come out. The rocket could then be turned off course by the string and then redirected to the kid or others on the ground.

Those Estes rockets are somewhat more than mere toys.

I did hesitate to post what I did out of concern of coming off too.... well.... "liberal".

I do remember once being part of a rocketry club. I had taken to building my own rockets out of parts I found in the house. Figured why bother buying semi expensive Estes kits when it was basically just a tube, construction board fins and a sheet of plastic for a parachute. Some of my home made creations worked great. My dad even complimented me once on how unexpectedly well (for him) a launch went.

One time though I had a home made creation that I guess was too short for the power of the motor I put in it. It was unbalanced. I launched it for the second time at a rocket meet, knowing what it would probably do. As soon as it cleared the launch wire, or whatever it's called that ensures it stays pointed straight up, the thing immediately started doing aerobatics, looping randomly, and it never made it more that 30 feet off the ground before popping the chute. It was funny as hell.

But I was warned afterwards that with so many people around, and there were, it was actually a bit dangerous to launch such a thing. The possibility of having hurt someone there actually kinda stuck with me. I'm obviously glad I didn't have to deal with that actually happening. It was indeed funny at the time, as many rocket launch mishaps are. But....

So that's where I was coming from.

Thanks for the explanation, it restores my faith in your manliness, and your words of caution from personal experience.

Shit ain't fun unless there is hospital potential.

We had to deal with that every concert we worked since most of us were in the crowd at one point or another.

Sometimes you had to take a few licks, but most of the time we got over on the culprit since they were either drunk or high, or just plain stupid. LOL
