Not having children, but observing many who do, I'd suggest encouraging your son in whatever it is that interests him most (and at which he'll enjoy because he excels) and let him find his own natural way.
Forcing him to choose college or a trade will end badly for you both.
It's his life, help him find the best path.
And who really cares, who defines, and what does it matter about "the higher levels of society" whatever that is.

Law school was fortunately still pretty much dominated by actual lawyers who were interested in producing lawyers, so that is still a good route for a man
