Parts of the planet could be rendered uninhabitable by the reversal, experts have warned

THE Earth's magnetic poles could be about to flip, sparking chaos and making large parts of the planet uninhabitable, it has emerged.

Experts have warned that the change is extremely likely with the magnetic field weakening by 15 per cent over 200 years. The earth's magnetic fields could flip, it has been warned Getty - Contributor 4 The earth's magnetic fields could flip, it has been warned

According to an Undark report, the flip could cause "devastating streams of particles from the sun, galactic cosmic rays, and enhanced ultraviolet B rays from a radiation".

The report warned that satellite timing systems that govern electric grids could fail, causing a ripple effect that would shut off lights, computers and phones. Even flushing the toilet could become impossible, according to the article.

The article shared concerns from Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, who warned "that parts of the planet will become uninhabitable during a reversal".

But a global apocalypse isn't guaranteed, as NASA explains: "Many doomsday theorists have tried to take this natural geological occurrence and suggest it could lead to Earth's destruction."

"But would there be any dramatic effects? The answer, from the geologic and fossil records we have from hundreds of past magnetic polarity reversals, seems to be 'no'."

While a magnetic reversal that works by the field weakening to nothing then starting back up the other way would be very dangerous for the down time, I've heard it speculated that that's not how it works. It could be more of a confusing period where the poles take on a hybrid N/S properties, with the N pole obtaining stronger and stronger S pole strength while its N polarity weakens, so there's no actual downtime.

If true, it could still cause chaos of sorts though, of course. Migrating animals might very well also throw a fit.

What should worry you is a crustal pole shift.

I had read that a magnetic pole shift would destroy all electronics not protected by a Faraday cage. Not sure that is not hype.

That`s not how plumbing works. Magnetic fields do not control air and water pressure.

I say it's hype. Everything on the entire planet is already present in a magnetic field, and electronics work fine. An EMP blast would ruin electronics but that's because it's a far stronger magnetic field that's involved. Earth mag field though far larger, is also far weaker by comparison.
