Just an item of note:

• Report raises question of anthrax, hijacker link

  The Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies' report raised questions about ties between Ahmed al-Haznawit -- who was treated at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale in June, 2001 -- and the spate of anthrax-laced letters sent through the U.S. mail that killed five in October and November.

• New evidence hints at hijack link to anthrax attacks

  The FBI concluded that the bio-agent is 'the most probable and coherent interpretation of the data available. Such a conclusion of course raises the possibility that the hijackers were handling anthrax and were the perpetrators of the anthrax letters'. Tsonas was also interviewed, and his notes examined, by experts at the Johns Hopkins Centre for Civilian and Biodefence Strategies.

• Hijacker's lesion deepens mystery

  The incident was reviewed more recently by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies in Baltimore. Dr. Thomas Inglesby and Dr. Tara O'Toole, who replaced Henderson as the center's director last fall, wrote a brief report for government officials that concluded anthrax was "the most probable and coherent interpretation of the data available."

  It is primarily concerned with the professional medical and military view: It has a narrow anti-bioterrorism focus, and does not engage general issues of biosecurity beyond overt human health hazards. It presents public health, professional/medical/military emergency response and bioethics as the most fundamental issues, as opposed to "who to blame a plague on" (the normal concern of biodefense).

  It may also be investigating the potential or requirement for medically-justified quarantine or even martial law measures, as suggested by phrases like "new... ethical standards" and "lessen the human suffering that would result it prevention fails."

I've nearly finished reading Robert Fisk's big book The Great War for Civilization. In the pages I read yesterday, he reminded me that Colin Powell, in his speech at the UN right before the Iraq war, mentioned the 2001 anthrax attacks in a way that was meant to suggest that Iraq was somehow responsible for them.
