The Jaysh al-Nasr rebel group in Syria, part of the US-backed Free Syrian Army, has posted footage of its fighters celebrating the shoot-down of a Russian Suhkoi-25 jet fighter in the Idlib province of Syria. It is the first time a Russian fighter has been shot down by Syrian rebels attempting to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

The plane was apparently brought down by a man-portable air defense system (ManPADS) surface-to-air missile. According to press reports, the pilot ejected from the plane safely but was killed by the Syrian rebels on the ground.

The 2017 US military spending bill provided authorization for the Department of Defense to arm the rebels with shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles or ManPADS. At the time, the Russians vigorously objected to the dramatic US move to provide sophisticated weaponry to the rebels, claiming (rightfully it turns out) that "[t]he relevant decision also poses a direct threat to aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces..."

The scenario where a US-backed, US-supplied jihadist group in Syria uses US weapons to shoot down a Russian plane and then murders the pilot on the ground should be seen as a near-nightmare escalation, drawing the US and Russia terrifyingly closer to direct conflict. SYRIA: RUSSIAN SUKHOI SU-25 SHOT OVER SARAQIB IN IDLIB PROVINCE

FEBRUARY 4, 2018 wp-1517712306001.jpg?w=474

A Russian-style Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack aircraft was lost over the strategic locality of Saraqib, Idlib province, in northern Syria, presumably shot down by antiaircraft gunfire Zu23-2 (23mm), S60 AZP (57mm) and ZPU (14.5mm) as well as SAM Strella and Igla missiles of rebel forces.

Some information evokes one or more SAM missiles from Manpads. Hypothesis unlikely according to some since none of the other devices seems to have been touched. However, it appears that at least one SAM missile exploded near the aircraft before being destroyed. Witnesses claim to have seen half a dozen SAM missiles leave at some point.

Russian pilots have the habit of descending to very low altitude - often up to a few tens of meters above the enemy, to carry out attacks against ground targets in CAS missions (Close Air Support)

The Russian Su-25 was on a ground support mission as part of the ongoing offensive by Syrian government forces in the northern province of Idlib. The main objective of this offensive is the capture of the strategic locality of Saraqib, near the Turkish border and between the northern edges of the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. A vital issue for the rebels.

The pilot of the aircraft managed to eject before being the subject of a furious manhunt. Stricken by the rebel hordes, the Russian soldier made use of his individual weapon before being mortally wounded by the enemy's bullets.

The Pentagon, for its part, strongly denied having directly or indirectly delivered Manpads to Syrian rebels.

IDLIB, Syria - Fighters of the elite Syrian Army unit known as the Tiger Forces, have promised in a video message to gain revenge for the Russian pilot killed yesterday in Syria.

Details of his death can be found here.

The warning from the soldiers was about teaching them a lesson for bringing down jets.

"Now they need to be stepped on. Now we're on our way to Idlib. We're going to Saraqeb to run them over, to teach them a lesson about bringing down planes," the video message said.

1000 American advisers work in Idlib, where Russian plane shot down

February 4 , 2018 - FRN -

Vesti - translated by Inessa Sinchougova

"The Russian Su-25 attack aircraft could have been shot down for provocation purposes", said Vladimir Shamanov, head of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee.

"It has come to light that there are more than 1,000 American instructors in Idlib, and it is impossible to rule out that they couldn't have done this for provocation purposes," the parliamentarian said.

A reminder, that the aircraft was flying in a de-escalation zone - as agreed to by Iran, Turkey and Russia.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, Franz Klintsevich, promised that Russia would conduct a serious investigation of the circumstances of the Su-25 attack in the de-escalation zone. He clarified that the investigation will seek to identify the MANPADS that were used to bring down the aircraft, and who provided them.

But Klintsevich also expressed his pre-investigation conviction that said MANPADS were supplied by the Americans.

The Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, together with the Turkish side responsible for the de-escalation zone of Idlib, are taking measures to bring the body of the Russian pilot home.

This incident brings Russia's loss of aircraft in Syria to eight - four aircraft and four helicopters.
