He was essentially a pseudo religious writer himself. So I guess he would know. He was friends with J.R.R. Tolkien and those two had differing religious views to the point of mention.

But yeah, a religious man will be, or can be, driven to act on things beyond his natural understanding. And if he's a bad guy to start with, and acts with all remnants of an objecting conscience completely swallowed by religious edicts...

You are right about Yagoda and Yezhov if I'm not mistaken, but Beria was Georgian and raised in a Georgian Orthodox home for the record.

While I doubt if any of these guys were religious in a conventional sense, there's no denying that there was deadly serious element of Judaic revenge manifest in the police state/Gulag meat grinder that swallowed up the lives of millions of innocents in the former Russian Empire.

Beria was said to be Georgian. Stalin was Jewish but said not to be. Beria's successor was Jewish. Khrushchev and Brezhnev were not Jewish but had Jewish wives and Jewish children.
