The Cumbre Vieja volcano's west flank has separated from the main cone and slipped down several feet. This raises a real possibility that an eruption will blow off the entire side of the mountain, as happened with Mt. Saint Helens. But unlike Mt. Saint Helens, Cumbre Vieja overlooks the ocean, which means a major tsunami would be created... heading west across the Atlantic. (That tsunami would wipe out the east coast of the US.)
During a Grand Solar Minimum there are increased numbers of volcanoes and earthquakes. 11 of 13 major Japanese volcanoes occurred during GSMs since 1703. Why? Because when the sun becomes less active it is less able to block cosmic rays (from exploding stars) reaching the earth. This increased incidence of cosmic rays actually received energizes earthquakes and volcanoes. It also increases cloud cover and reduces that altitude of clouds which makes for cooler and more variable weather. During the Maunder Minimum we lost 25% of the world's 500 million people due to famine and increased disease. We have 7.1 billion more people today than in 1650. We could easily lose a few billion people.
