Americans and Europeans visiting China remark upon the gender imbalance in Chinese classrooms where 65% in Beijing are male but 80% are male in rural areas. That imbalance means that most men will not get a wife and children. A NY Times reporter who went with Nixon the China in 1972 said that rural populations were 2 a/2 times greater than reported in Chinese government stats. China has several hundred million more people than they say. I met a well paid Chinese executive who could not get a date back in Beijing. Why? He was only 5 ' 3". He said the women wanted men who were 6 foot. He did not even have a date in the past 3 years.
I got to talk to a visiting Chinese executive when he visited our website in Silicon Valley in 1999. He said the women only married tall men. Our boss tried to force one of our female programmers to have sex with the man. That did not go over even though the girl in question had a live in Chinese boyfriend. She went on to Yale graduate school in Computer Science after the company went IPO in the Dot Com era. It was later sold to Barnes and Noble for an inflated price.
I was working the warehouse. I got $14,000 in cash and bonuses plus a retirement cash payout. I went into technical training and made even more but the bottom dropped out in 2001 with the Dot Com bust. I since retired and moved to a state where our cost of living is 50 points lower. Our cost of living is 89% of average. California is 141% of average.
