Title: Town Of Dillingham Installs 80 Cameras To Stave Off Terrorism

Some citizens outraged; police say cameras could stop deaths, drug deals

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANCHORAGE - Dillingham is a quiet fishing village in Southwest Alaska, home to 2,400 people and not a single streetlight.

What it does have, however, is 80 surveillance cameras, focused on the port and the town, courtesy of a $202,000 Homeland Security federal grant.

Dillingham Police Chief Richard Thompson said the cameras could stop terrorism in Southwest Alaska someday. More to the point, they may also put an end to the drinking, deaths and drug deals that go down at the port every summer when the town fills up with commercial fishermen.

If the system prevents even one death, Thompson said, "I don't care what's said about me."

But some townsfolk are outraged. The only thing being captured by the cameras, they said, are their civil liberties.

"I think it's an invasion of privacy," said Freeman Roberts, a barge captain. "The government shouldn't be in the business of looking at people."

A quiet city like Dillingham doesn't need one camera for every 30 people, said Tim Smeekins.

"There are no jihadist sockeyes swimming into our bay, no militant moose, no bomb-bearing belugas," he said.

Thompson said the public opposition in Dillingham comes from misunderstanding. The cameras, all of which won't be fully operational until summer, take still pictures every 15 minutes. They have no audio. The images will be stored only if there is a crime, he said.

The chief said that if weapons are ever transported through Dillingham on large freighters traveling to Anchorage or Seattle, "it might someday be useful to know which ship dropped that cargo off or picked it up."

The cameras are mostly aimed at the port, the chief said. About three dozen cameras watch from poles there. Another seven gaze at the harbor from City Hall. Some with dual lenses, critics say, resemble storm trooper helmets from Star Wars.

Donna Shade, owner of the Cafe Hillside in Dillingham, said she's sure Thompson has good intentions, but argues the surveillance cuts into the freedom that defines rural Alaska.

"What happens is all of a sudden a community becomes untrustworthy, and that I find troubling," she said.

Smeekins and other critics are circulating a petition demanding the cameras come down. More than 200 area residents have signed, he said. Critics hope to put the question on the local ballot this fall.

As Diana knows, I was raised in that part of Alaska, about 100 miles away from Dillingham. I've spent a fair amount of time in Dillingham.

The locals will either order those cameras taken down, or use them as target practice; with their next "Bud." (Budweiser, that is.)

At a minimum, the good sheriff is looking for another job. They don't last long in Dillingham, anyway.

Sad that anyone would even consider putting a sleepy fishing village under electronic scrutiny.

The worst part is that doing anything to those cameras may be considered "terrorism."

Certainly at least a felony, given the fact that they paid about $2,500 for each one.

I think that you can get them at Sam's Club for less than $100, but that doesn't include the $2,000 each kickbacks or installation.

LOL!

Funny how ALL the cameras malfunctioned at the same time, and only at the locations that would have told the whole story.

And, even if cameras are not "broken", cameras cannot stop a crime. At best, they might tell you who committed one. Also in England, the terrible kidnap/murders of two 10 year olds in red shirts was neither prevented nor did it catch the evil perpetrator; despite their being on camera in their bright red shirts.

I don't think I heard that before. So "live" means we should have been able to see what those choppers were doing that flew over the WTC (from Rick Siegel's footage in Hoboken and Sinatra Pier they were just visible through the smoke).

There aren't too many rowdy people living here, the drinking crowd in this town don't even pay attention to such issues.

It's mostly the educated people who are upset over the cameras. And we shouldn't have to deal with spy cameras here as there is very little crime besides drunks having fights with their spouses.

A few years ago some teenage boys went to the overnight parking lot at the airport and smashed a bunch of car windows and from time to time tires get slashed out there, yet there are no cameras at all at the airport, they are all downtown and at the boat harbour. I suspect the police chief is on a power trip.

Now, was the idea his, versus a prompting call from DHS?

The other day I was walking out of a store on Main Street, and I looked up at the cameras and gave them a big wave.

Many people are saying those cameras take away the feeling of freedom and privacy so cherished in rural Alaska. I don't even want to go to the boat harbour anymore as they watch every car that drives through there. I don't want to be a potential "suspect". Guess I'll have to find other areas to go to to let the dogs run. Many people like to hang out at the boat harbour as they have picnic tables and it's very pretty, but having those cameras peering down takes away any enjoyment.

I really find it interesting that they didn't put any cameras at the airport; as I mentioned there has been vandalizm at the overnight parking lot, but since there are normally no people hanging out there, Chief of Police Thompson is not interested.

It's too bad we have a FOX news fan/control freak as our chief of police. People say he's a very vindictive person too.

Kinda. The little community of Dillingham, whose lives their people-lover mayor allegedly wants to protect, is more likely populated by stupid scumbags, whose lives are pretty pointless and insignificant though. ;o) If the entire town were blown off the map, along with the worthless scumbags infesting it, by a 'terrorist' it wouldn't mean a anything to the rest of the country. The typical reaction would be, "Dilli-who was struck by 'terrorists'?".

And why is it that Dillingham is infested by stupid scumbags whose lives are pointless and insignificant, more so than other places? That reminds me of the way Israelis talk about Palestinians! How interesting!

You are correct however that if it was blown off the map, it wouldn't mean anything to anyone because the vast majority of people aren't aware that there are any life forms stupid or otherwise west of the Anchorage/Fairbanks area. Western Alaska is inhabited mostly by Eskimos, except for Nome.

The mayor of Dillingham oddly has no power. The city manager and the cheif of police are the ones who like to throw their weight around. There are some very interesting people in Dillingham, mostly nonconformists, not counting the Eskimos.

You are correct though in that terrorists would not waste their time blowing up a tiny place no one has ever heard of.

When the old police cheif quit a few years ago, the city looked high and low to find a replacement. I don't know if they advertized, but they were unable to find anyone for the position. So they made Thompson, who was a regular cop at that time, the police chief. No one else wanted that job.

Some years ago when my ex-husband became ill and lost so much weight, I was home by myself and there was a knock on the door. It was Thompson with another cop (this was before he became police chief) and they wanted to check our garage because he said because of my ex's obvious weight loss and because of his science background, he wanted to check the garage to see if he had a meth lab (there is no meth in Dillingham). So they barged in, I followed them into the garage, and they took out flashlights and looked all over the place for his supposed meth lab and of course did not find it.

At the time I didn't even think about how they had to have search warrents, they didn't have one and I didn't ask but Thompson seemed to have no qualms about busting in the house to look for a meth lab in the garage, simply because my ex-husband had lost weight and had a chemistry background. This shows Thompson's mentality.

It's like schools with disadvantaged children, they get more money if they get a silver meth-lab star.

Everyone needs to know about this. They have NO AUTHORITY without a complaint and a warrant which is verified by an affidavit under penalty of perjury.

If you tell them get lost they have to go. NEVER volunteer to allow them to do anything, even if you have done nothing wrong. THAT would be all the more reason to tell them to get lost. Their bullshit suspicions have no weight in law and it is a violation of their fiduciary duty when they violate your property rights or inalienable rights which they have sworn to uphold and protect. Especially so this is true of a city cop who is merely a hireling and has no authority outside the city limits or with anyone who is not a citizen or resident (you are neither in your private capacity) of the municipality. (BILLS v CITY OF GOSHEN, 20 N.E. 115, 117).

I could be a rocket scientist and they could not come on my property looking for ICBMs unless they had a warrant to look for them. These jerks need to have complaints filed against them EVERY TIME they step outside their bounds.
