'Cesspool': Philippine's Boracay Island to Close For 6 Months

By Pam Wright 3 days ago weather.com

It’s been ranked one of the best islands in the world, now Boracay is being closed to tourists over raw sewage.

At a Glance

The island, famed for its turquoise waters and powdery sand, attracts an estimated 2 million tourists each year.

It was once named the best island in the world from an international travel magazine.

Philippine president has accused the island’s businesses of dumping sewage directly into the sea around it.

One of the Philippine's most popular tourist hotspots will close for up to 6 months after years of overcrowding and overdevelopment.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who called Boracay Island a "cesspool" last February and accused island’s hotels and restaurants of dumping sewage into the sea around it, approved closing the tourist destination Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

The nearly 4-square mile island famed for its turquoise waters and powdery sand is 200 miles south of Manila and is visited by an estimated 2 million tourists each year. The small island can support about 30,000 people but at times hosts an estimated 70,000.

During the closure that will begin April 26, sewage containment facilities will be built. Currently, only an estimated 47 percent of the island is linked to its sewage treatment plant. The rest of the island has rudimentary septic tanks or waste is released directly into the sea.

The closure will result in the loss of an estimated 700,000 bookings, the Philippine Star reports, which amounts to more than $57 million.

Tourism undersecretary Frederick Alegre said Thursday that the government is working on ways to help the 17,000 workers who will lose their jobs during the shutdown, including using emergency calamity funds.

“This is not about profit, it’s about the political will to deal with years of neglect of the environment,” Alegre said. “We need to act swiftly to save the island and avert its further deterioration.”

Philippine Airlines announced it would reduce flights destined for airports that serve the island.

“Boracay is a national treasure,” PAL president Jaime Bautista said. “We fully support the government’s intention to make Boracay fully safe and environmentally friendly. Sustainable development is of critical concern, and we are one with the laudable goal to revert the island to a balanced eco-tourism paradise.

In 2012, the Philippine island was named the best island in the world from the international travel magazine Travel + Leisure.

Chicago learned also about raw sewage which was released into the Chicago River. Because of the Sanitary and Ship Canal which reversed the flow of the river, all of that pollution was flowing down the Illinois River and the towns and residents along that river began to complain. The solution was to construct the Deep Tunnel System in the Pennsylvanian limestone under and parallel to the Chicago River and the Des Plaines River.

Now when there are heavy rains, the sewage from the combined sewer system overflows in the Deep Tunnel and is pumped out later for treatment.

Of course there is no such solution for the sewage troubles in the Philippines.

Well, for the island in question, if treatment can't be done on the desired scale, it just means restricting it's capacity. Rates will go up, but that's how supply & demand works. It seems there simply isn't enough supply.

More likely there is too much demand. If capacity is reduced, the prices will go sky high since they will not be able to support the economy with fewer guests. ;)
