Syria and Iran are discussing the establishment of an Iranian strategic oil pipeline across Iraq

Syria and Iran are discussing the establishment of an Iranian strategic oil pipeline across Iraq, an official Syrian newspaper reported on Tuesday.

A Syrian-Iranian Joint Committee discussed ways to improve work on building a strategic oil pipeline in cooperation with the Iraqi government, Al-Thawra newspaper said, adding that three countries will benefit from the project.

According to the report, the pipeline will run across Iraq, Syria to the Mediterranean Sea.

The deal is part of a Memo of Understanding signed between Syria and Iran on the improvement of oil, gas and petrochemicals projects in an attempt to continue and improve cooperation in this field.

The joint committee also discussed the possibility of building a strategic gas line across Iraq and Syria to link it to the Arab Gas Line which is under construction to transport the Egyptian gas through Syria and Jordan.

Syria and Iran boosted their trade ties recently. Both countries signed preferential trade agreements and several accords on finance, industry, power, textile, oil, environment, and culture during last month‘s visit by Tehran’s First Vice-President Parviz Davoudi to Damascus.

BlackJade writes: ""Syria and Iran are discussing the establishment of an Iranian strategic oil pipeline across Iraq"? And "A Syrian-Iranian Joint Committee discussed ways to improve work on building a strategic oil pipeline in cooperation with the Iraqi government"? The last time I looked, Iraq was under US military occupation. The US media seems to be too absorbed in the Bush administration's saber rattling toward Iran & Syria to notice what is really happened in Iraq. That seems to be the PR strategy of the administration, in order to avoid a major Iran-gate scandal. As Robert Dreyfuss put it: "SCIRI [Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq], which was created by Iran and has strong backing from Teheran, is the most powerful force in the new Iraq....At present, our 160,000 troops are propping up a pro-Iranian, fanatical power center in Baghdad. This is one of the major scandals of the Iraq war." A US attack on Iran would mean that the US would be fighting a war with the Baghdad regime, which US troops are defending. During this US-led "regime change" operation in the 1990's, Ahmed Chalabi was the go-between for the US, Iran, & the SCIRI. Saddam's opponents seek US backing for coup - December 20, 1998

"Dr Ahmed Chalabi, head of the Iraqi National Congress which represents the widest assortment of Iraqi opposition elements, has also told Washington he has the support of Iran and Tehran-backed muslim guerilla leaders ready to start an insurgency in three key cities of southern Iraq, Amara, Nasriyah and Basra.
Chalabai visited the Iranian capital late last month to meet senior government officials and Ayatollah Bakr Mohammed, head of the Supreme Council for Islamic Resistance in Iraq (SCIRI).

Popular resistance to Saddam's government has already begun in Amara, and the Thawra section of Baghdad where scores of armed protesters were shot at by Saddam's Republican Guard last Friday night.
The reports of insurrection are backed by the Tehran-supported SCIRI and independent sources in Iran.
American planes have been dropping thousands of Arabic leaflets over southern Iraq, explaining that Operation Desert Fox is directed only against Saddam and not against soldiers and ordinary people.......
The success of the INC plan, which has been submitted to Pentagon officials, depends crucially on whether the US and Britain are prepared to enforce a "no drive" military exclusion zone in the south. This would stretch west of the Euphrates and south of the 32nd parallel. It would be policed from the air in much the same way as the Kurdish safe haven in the North....
Richard Perle, an Assistant Secretary of State to Presidents Reagan and Bush, is one of the Washington experts lobbying for the INC plan....."

When Chalabi's connections with Iranian intelligence hit the US "mainstream" press, the Bush administration quickly put out the story that they had "disowned" Chalabi. After a brief "time out," Chalabi was back in the game as the liaison for Tehran & Washington. During Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Chalabi's visit to Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad "insisted on expediting work to set up an oil pipeline between Iran's port city of Abadan and Basra, Iraq's second largest city. Ahmadinejad also called for completing a railway project connecting both countries." After his visit to Iran, Chalabi went to Washington. According to UPI, November 14, 2005, Chalabi said that "A major factor in Syrian-Iraqi relations is oil...and opening a pipeline from Iraq to the Mediterranean Sea through Syria would be of 'enormous benefit' to Syria and could be used to negotiate help in the war on terrorism." This was evidently a reference to the Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline arriving at the Syrian port of Ladicia

"According to the report, the pipeline will run across Iraq, Syria to the Mediterranean Sea"? This isn't exactly a novel idea. I posted this article in June 2005: Mediterranean pipeline deal signed with Syria: "Iran and Syria will construct an oil pipeline which will traverse Iraq and Syria and extend to the Mediterranean coast." This is "part of a package which also includes the establishment of a railroad passing through the three countries as well as creating an East-West Corridor stretching from Central Asia to Europe."

There's no doubt about Iran's role in the US-led "regime change" operation to get rid of Saddam Hussein's regime. There also are a lot of unanswered questions about Syria's and Hezbullah's role this operation. In US-occupied Iraq, Prime Minister Ibrahim Jafari is the leader of the Dawa Party. "Radical clerics from Al Da'wa founded Lebanon's Hizbullah organization." It isn't much of a secret that Syria & Iran have been Hizbullah's chief sponsors for years, and that Syria was Iran's ally in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980's. In this May 2003 interview, SCIRI's representative in the UK Dr. Hamid al-Bayati said "We used to have camps in Syria and were trained by the Syrian authorities."

"The joint committee also discussed the possibility of building a strategic gas line across Iraq and Syria to link it to the Arab Gas Line which is under construction to transport the Egyptian gas through Syria and Jordan"? In September 2004, Iraq "joined the Arab Mashreq Gas transport project which so far includes Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Jordan." The "Syrian minister of oil Ibrahim Haddad said that the Arab line in Syria will feed the transportation of gas to Iraq from Homs district." "
