There is now more freedom of speech in Beijing than in the San Francisco Bay area — and this could kill the Silicon Valley tech industry.

While right-wing commentators have been saying this for years, it’s extremely unusual to hear it from the lips of a Silicon Valley tech guru as impeccably liberal as Sam Altman.

Altman, influential and respected CEO of Y Combinator — an accelerator program for Silicon Valley start-ups — has triggered outrage in the tech community for having dared to suggest that political correctness has gotten so bad that it threatens to destroy their business model.

He writes in his latest blogpost:

Earlier this year, I noticed something in China that really surprised me. I realized I felt more comfortable discussing controversial ideas in Beijing than in San Francisco. I didn’t feel completely comfortable—this was China, after all—just more comfortable than at home.

That showed me just how bad things have become, and how much things have changed since I first got started here in 2005.

It seems easier to accidentally speak heresies in San Francisco every year. Debating a controversial idea, even if you 95% agree with the consensus side, seems ill-advised.

This will be very bad for startups in the Bay Area.

You can have freedom to think and innovate or you can have political correctness, but you can’t have both, he warns...........

That's for sure. A pal who used to live there sends me no end of horror stories on it and LA, e.g.:

I read the article about the street people in SF and I have seen it over 20 years ago when I decided to move away from "The Land of Temptations" for good. At that time I was earning about $22,000 a year in The Salvation Army's Development Department at Divisional Headquarters. About the only apartment I could afford was a studio apartment in an old building. The rent was $480 a month. Now I suspect it would cost $2,000/month for the same place. The libs in SF have done it to themselves and most of the homeless don't really care about a responsible life. Many are already on SSI and blow most of their money on drugs and partying. There are plenty of feeding places where they can eat.

For as long as I can remember SF has been a bit costly but the average person could at least find something fairly decent. SF is the financial center of the West and offers lots of office/clerical jobs for the average worker. These jobs really don't pay anything other than just slightly above restaurant, janitorial , or retail. If a person didn't want a roommate he/she could find maybe a residential hotel room or studio apartment in a not so good neighborhood. Now I think it would be impossible to live in a place without a roommate or 2 or 3. The slumlords used to abound in SF; I don't know about it these days because I haven't been back in over 20 years.

Frankly, I don't see the big attraction there other than the weather and a place to party around the clock. If one believes in the wrath of god he/she had better clear out of SF and LA. We all know about the earthquake threats for SF, but a fire could be a disaster for the city. There are many very old, wooden buildings there. Did you hear about the modern, expensive residential skyscraper that is now sinking slowly? It's located at 301 Mission St. (I used to work in that area, but that block has been long-since demolished). That area is also very vulnerable due to the fact that it is built on landfill. The greedy real estate owners are seeing their karma come to fruition. I'll take little ole Greenville any day.

I'm including this comment from an article about how the expensive housing in CA is totally out of control.

Just remember: San Francisco = Sodom Los Angeles = Gomorrah

"I just left Los Angeles. That town is a dirty, festering pit. Human feces on the street, scraps of litter all over, everything is dirty to the touch, transgender prostitutes calling out to you, marijuana smell everywhere and used needles in the alleys and parks. Speaking of parks, don't bother going to one. They are teeming with homeless drug addicts. There really isn't a 'nice' part of L.A. Even Santa Monica, where I worked, was dirty. And it doesn't matter what part of Los Angeles you are, every single gas station, grocery store, restaurant or bar has a homeless person standing at the entrance who will block your way coming and going, asking for money. And for those that are employed, nearly everyone is in some sort of shared living situation because housing is so expensive. I was there for 6 months and I had a great career ahead of me. But I just couldn't sign a lease, couldn't commit to staying there for the duration of any lease. If they want to secede, let them."
