FRN... Colombian President Juan Manuel Santons announced on Friday that a partnership agreement with NATO and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has been signed.
The president stressed that the country will be the only one in Latin America with the “privilege” of being part of NATO. Colombia has also partnered with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
“Being a member of the OECD will enable us to do things better, see what went wrong and what worked in other countries. With our entry, we will improve our public policies,” said the Colombian leader.

He stressed that “Colombia will be the only country in Latin America that has such a privilege.”
“Entry into NATO improves the image of Colombia and allows us to have much more game on the international scene,” he added.
“We will formalize in Brussels next week -and this is very important- the entry of Colombia into NATO in the category of global partner, we will be the only country in Latin America with this privilege,” the president said in a televised address from the presidential Narino Palace.
Venezuela has decried the announcement as an “attempt to introduce external factors with nuclear capacity” in the region.
At the beginning of 2017, the then Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodríguez argued that Colombia’s joining NATO would violate the Tlatelolco Treaty established in 1969 to prohibit nuclear weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In addition, Colombia is part of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM), one of the essential principles of which states that its members “cannot be part of any type of military and warlike organization such as the North Atlantic Treaty.”
Colombia has been US imperialism’s key ally – some might even say puppet – in the region, particularly in anti-Venezuelan operations.
