Video says people are stepping all over each other in a rush to get Tesla's free energy flowing on a mass scale? Is this true? Biggest development of the 21st c. if so. I hope so but haven't heard it anywhere else? Depending on the particulars of that phone's battery charge management circuitry, it's possible -- though not likely -- that the phone might think a charger is attached and so indicate that. But with an antenna that small you couldn't harvest energy fast enough from radio waves to actually charge the battery. (The phone would use more power telling you that it's charging than the power you're putting into it.) And in any case, the energy wouldn't be free anyway, because someone has to pay the power bill over at the radio transmitting tower. His circuit is conceptually similar to the crystal radio I built 50 years ago. It would power a piezoelectric earpiece, but not my mother's washing machine or my sister's Easy-Bake Oven.
I was going to mention crystal radios! Used to makem as a kid -- every kid should, but where do you buy a germanium diode now that Radio Shack is kaputt? Lots of sellers on ebay offering 1N34A diodes cheap. But using a modern diode (like I did) is cheating. Hard core retros make their own cat whisker detector. This guy is a crystal radio enthusiast: www.techlib.com/electro nics/crystal.html Regarding power harvesting: A longer antenna would help increase the received signal strength, but you still could never harvest enough energy from a commercial radio or TV broadcast to really power anything except an extremely low power device. Wireless transmission of high power requires close magnetic coupling or directed transmission of high frequency energy such as microwaves.
