Shrimp Nutrition: Is Shrimp Healthy or Harmful to Your Health?

Dr. Josh Axe

Shrimp is the most commonly consumed seafood in the United States and the most highly traded seafood in the world, but this high demand has led to many environmental and human rights abuses in the fishing, farming and processing of shrimp. We’re routinely given little information about the shrimp we purchase and what the shrimp nutrition actually is, which is more important now than ever because shrimp is being impacted by several problems, including diseases, antibiotic use and environmental factors. (1)

Twenty-five percent of the seafood consumption in the United States is shrimp, and the average American consumes four pounds of shrimp every year. That may be because we consider it to be a healthy form of protein that’s low in calories, and that’s true for fresh, wild shrimp, but farm fish has proven to be unhealthy and toxic, making it among the worst seafood and fish you shouldn’t eat. In fact, it’s been proven to be even more toxic than farmed tilapia and catfish, which rank as the second and third most polluted foods from the sea. Love shrimp? Learn the secret to make sure your shrimp is safe to eat.

Is Shrimp Nutrition Healthy?

Because shrimp has become the most popular seafood in the United States, methods of intensive production began expanding in the 1970s. Rather than being caught at sea, large quantities of shrimp are grown in man-made ponds containing a mix of ocean and fresh water along the coast of countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Ecuador. These shrimp are often referred to as “farmed,” and they may be labeled “farm-raised,” but the scary part is they’re often produced under unsafe and unhealthy conditions.

Research shows that eating fish that’s farmed abroad may lead to serious health conditions, such as neurological damage, allergies, and other infections and illnesses. These can occur from ingesting shrimp contaminated with pesticide residues, antibiotics or pathogens resistant to antibiotics, such as E. coli. These conditions offset virtually any benefits of shrimp nutrition, instead turning the shrimp nutrition into toxic substances for the body.

We stopped eating shrimp when 1) the Gulf was poisoned with Corexit and 2) eliminating Country of Origin labeling was enacted.

My boss sold a building he owned on the square to the people that opened the new donut shop. He went on a cruise afterward. He said they had Lobster tails, Crab legs and all you could eat shrimp. He did not say how much the cruise cost him, but I bet it was plenty. ;)

Don't know for certain. But a lot of farm raised shrimp come from places like Ecuador.

I told them a story here at Cap's Cabin where they serve fried shrimp. When I drove big truck out of Chicago, I had a load going to Colorado. We didn't have the tax stamp to go into that state, so I had to go around the scale house going in. After I made my delivery in Broomfield, I hooked up with this girl named Stacy who lived in west suburban Denver that I knew from working concerts in Chicago. She frequently had back stage passes.

We went with her and her room mate and her boyfriend to a Hooter's for dinner. We ordered something that came with shrimp. But she didn't eat shrimp. They put 2 lbs of shrimp in one bowl and I ate them all. They tried to charge us for 2 lbs of shrimp so I complained. I said, "How am I supposed to know what a pound of shrimp looks like. I was hungry and hadn't eaten all day." So they gave us a discount.

They said over at Cap's Cabin, "You better not try that here." I told them those were boiled shrimp, not fried shrimp. ;)

One of the great things about cruising is that except for the cabins, which I'll discuss later, the rest of the meals, services, and amenities are all alike for all guests no matter what they paid for the cruise. For us, the very bottom of the ship was the best: it's always dark and quiet should you want to nap, and if the sea becomes rough, you don't notice it nearly as much as those berthed topside.

Search for cruise ship bargains and get ready to book one.

Judging from my fear of airports, I'm sure it would be no more than 6 hours before I would be scurrying toward the engine room of any large vessel, snatching cheese sandwiches at every opportunity.

That's another great thing about a cruise, food (really good to great food) is available at least 23 hours/day.

If I were to die on a cruise ship, I would hope the locals find me rather than the port authorities. Why? You ask...

Port Authorities would throw me under the bus, as it were...locals might do a dance.Dance me out, Orville!!!!
