Jogger Crosses U.S.-Canada Border, Is Held for 2 Weeks

A French citizen was detained for two weeks in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) facility after accidentally jogging from Canada into Blaine, Washington.

On May 21, Cedella Roman was running along a beach in British Columbia when the tide started to rise, causing her to alter her path. As she turned to head back to visit her mother, who lives in British Columbia, two U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents appeared.

“An officer stopped me and started telling me I had crossed the border illegally. I told him I had not done it on purpose and that I didn’t understand what was happening,” Roman told Canada’s CBC News. “I said to myself, 'Well, I may have crossed the border, but they’ll probably only give me a fine, or they’ll tell me to go back to Canada, or they’ll give me a warning.'”

Instead, the agents detained her and sent her to the DHS-operated Tacoma Northwest Detention Center, located more than 124 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border.

“They put me in the caged vehicles and brought me into their facility. They asked me to remove all my personal belongings with my jewelry,” Roman said. “They searched me everywhere.”

Roman told CBC News that she was allowed to contact her mother, Christiane Ferne, from the facility. Ferne promptly traveled to the facility to give Roman’s passport and study permits to employees, who instructed her to show those records to Canadian immigration officials.

Roman was released on June 6—two weeks and two days after crossing the border—when immigration officials in both the U.S. and Canada approved her re-entry into the latter country.

“It was just unfair that there was nothing, no sign at the border. It’s like a trap...anybody can be caught at the border like this” said Ferne.

In 2016, two children playing the newly released Pokémon Go were so immersed in the game that they crossed Canada’s 5,525-mile border with the U.S.

The agents who found the children in 2016 were more forgiving than those encountered by Roman, and helped reunite the children with their mother. “Both juveniles were so captivated by their Pokémon Go games that they lost track of where they were,” said Border Patrol Public Affairs Officer Michael Rappold at the time.

A spokesperson for CBP told CBC News that all individuals who arrive in the U.S. without permission to legally cross the border will be subjected to a standardized processing procedure.

Poster Comment:

I am thinking the border was not marked, otherwise she might have seen a sign.

Can you believe this? They can't mark the entire border -- it's 5,525 miles long. Bet people passed back and forth freely until we became the USSA on 9/11.

It's good to know they're apprehending joggers up there (no doubt she's white) while welcoming brown caravans in down below.

I absolutely love that kind of thing! There's one on enclaves and exclaves that's purely priceless.

That is very interesting. But since I do not live there, or plan on going anywhere near there, I really don't give a rat's ass. ;)

Oh, sure, that's easy for someone to say if they "do not live there, or plan on going anywhere near there," and so don't have to cross 6 borders to get from one part of Oman to the top. : /

You think it should be off-limits for joshing?

No. I was razzing both of BTP's replies, @ #4 [re: Canada] and #6 [re: Oman]. Liked the very informative vids you linked @ #8. I don't often step down the speed on videos but did for those and turned the closed captioning on, too, so I could better understand the complexities that the narrator was explaining -- especially about the unclaimed boderland in Part 1 re: Egypt and Sudan [@ 6:44-8:14], as well as Part 2 re: Croatia and Serbia [@ 6:41-7:50]. Was thinking of claiming all of it but it was already taken before I got to Part 3 [@ 1:19-2:16]. Was a bit of a disappointment but good to see from the scrolling text @ 0:15-0:17 that a libertarian country called Liberland was established from some of the land along the Serbia-Croatia border.

Whoa, how do you step down the tempo of an existing video? With video editing tools after downloading, right?

I'm in a crisis -- was using UmmyVideoDownloader and it was working like a charm, but then it simply stopped doing so. As if it's programmed to go on strike over "racist neo-Nazi KKK right wing extremist" material.

It's easy -- no need to go through any cantankerous downloader outsource at YouTube. They have their very own thought-control censors blocking access to videos they'd rather not be viewable. Just click on a YouTube link and then click the gear icon at the bottom-right of the screen. The box that appears will show the default speed as Normal. Click on that option and scroll up or down to adjust -- downward to step up the speed as much as x2 and upward to step it down as low as 1/4th. Usually, 1.5 speed is the best time-saving way for me to still hear speakers clearly (without having to stop and back up much) who are talking at an average or slower pace. 0.75 speed or less is helpful for faster-talking or accented speakers, for transcriptions and taking notes or when there is more than one person talking at the same time. Good luck to you wih that. : )

Smashing -- thanks! It's just amazing how much useful stuff is already done or provided free for us. I tried an option there for subtitles but it didn't work -- can't have everything.

Let us know if you come across a free, reliable video downloader please.

You're welcome. Keep trying the CC/Closed Captioning/Subtitles option. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but does tend to translate inaccurately at times, even when it is working -- frequently very goofishly garbled but still might convey the gist or words in question. I avoid intentionally downloading or uploading to file but will flag you if I see an add that looks recommendable. Bill Still's websites might have something of good quality listed there. He advertises VPN/Virtual Private Network stuff and such that he considers safe and reliable in his Still Report videos.
