Those familiar with his retinue of 1-minute remarks will recognize his trademark statement: "Beam me up!" (The reference is to a Star Trekian, "Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life on this planet.") On March 20, 2001, Traficant spoke as follows: Mr. TRAFICANT. From the womb to the tomb, Madam Speaker, the Internal Rectal Service is one big enema. Think about it: they tax our income, they tax our savings, they tax our sex, they tax our property sales profits, they even tax our income when we die. Is it any wonder America is taxed off? We happen to be suffering from a disease called Taxes Mortis Americanus. Beam me up. It is time to pass a flat, simple 15 percent sales tax, and fire these nincompoops at the IRS. Think about it. I yield back the socialist, communist income tax scheme of these United States. On Feb. 28, 2001, Traficant spoke as follows: Mr. TRAFICANT. Mr. Speaker, imagine a raid by 150 policemen. Was it a mob bust in Russia? No. Was it a drug warehouse in China? No. It was a church in Indianapolis. That is right. The Internal Revenue Service raided a Baptist Church seizing the pastor, and, in fact, removing the pastor by force. Unbelievable. Now, everyone knows there is two sides to every story. Think about it. In America, you cannot pray in school, but now, the IRS can raid churches. Beam me up. America is going to hell in a hand basket. I yield back the Gestapo attitude that just keeps growing in our Federal Government. On May 25, 2001, Traficant spoke as follows: Mr. TRAFICANT. Madam Speaker, an investigation revealed that 16,000 IRS employees illegally used their computers. The report states IRS agents spent 50 percent of their time at work on personal business. If that is not enough to service your revenue, IRS agents illegally used their computers for shopping, stock trading, gambling and pornography. Unbelievable. Think about it. While 60 percent of taxpayer calls to the IRS go unanswered, the IRS agents were watching Marilyn Chambers do the Rotary International. Beam me up here. It is time to pass a flat 15 percent sales tax and abolish this gambling, porno-watching IRS completely. I yield back the internal rectal service of the United States of America. Worth Considering Traficant was convicted on April 11th of "taking bribes and kickbacks from businessmen and his staff in exchange for lobbying government regulators." [2] Now, Traficant's congressional colleagues are hypocritically shocked -- shocked! -- that any member of the U.S. Congress could have been influenced by money. They want Traficant to voluntarily resign from office. But might the Ohio congressman have been a target of "dirty tricks" by powerful hidden enemies in such agencies as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Justice Department? Traficant was outspoken and relentless in his scorn for the IRS and corrupt government in general. And documents read into the Congressional Record by Traficant succeed in bypassing the mass media roadblock of his side of the case. In "Extensions of Remarks", Nov. 6, 2001 (Page E2010), affidavits and documents indicate that the Ohio congressman had gotten on someone powerful's "Enemies List." For example, a letter by Henry A. DiBlasio to Traficant relates, in part, as follows: "A most disconcerting event took place on Thursday, January 13, 2000. I thought that I should call it to your attention because you appear to be the ``main target'' and I was obviously contacted in their attempt coerce me to agree to certain allegations that are absolutely not true. The following is what happened." "Three gentlemen came in and showed me their credentials and then gave me their cards. Two of them were real bruisers, or maybe I should say ``big''. The two FBI persons were, Michael S. Pikunas of Youngstown, Ohio and John E. Stoll, also of Youngstown, Ohio. The other fellow was Charles L. Perkins, Special Agent for the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations. At this point I really felt intimidated. They made it clear that they were out to find information that could or would be used against you. In fact, they made it clear that if I admitted what they brought up they would protect me." "At my age, and in my poor health condition, I am surprised I did not collapse. They said that others in your office and elsewhere had said certain things about me that violated Federal Laws. I was absolutely astonished. By the way, they never read me my rights but they just kept on pressing me to admit to things that I not only did not do but I could never have thought of doing." "They said they had evidence of my not working enough to justify being paid. They said that I should have filed a disclosure statement each year as required. They said I gave you back some rental that had been paid for your space at 11 Overhill Rd. They said that I gave you part of what I received for my pay. They also said I earned more money than I should have while on your staff. In general, they said that I was in violation of many laws and that if I admitted to these violations so they could ``get you'' they would really ``protect me.''" "Jim, as you know, I am not a criminal lawyer, I was absolutely puzzled and certainly felt intimidated. I have never been accused of violating the law or even violating ethics as a lawyer. I really pondered over whether I should contact you because I know how busy you are and how many things are on your mind at all times. But, the other day, I really received a shock." "A local FBI agent, Jeff Danik, called me and informed me that the Youngstown fellows had asked him to serve a subpoena on me. We finally got together on January 20, 2000. To my continued amazement, the subpoena requested that I appear in Cleveland, Ohio on February 1, 2000 to testify regarding John Doe. Of course, I know they are referring to you as ``John Doe''." "First of all, they did not give me much notice. Also, I live in Florida and am retired. Why should I pay my own expenses to travel to Cleveland? In winter to boot. I have had to hire legal counsel to protect myself. How can the Government do this and get away with it?" Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
