Title: 4um has a New Sheriff

Actually the title isn't entirely true because I've technically been the sheriff for a number of months already, since I received the blessing directly from the royal Christine herself! But I'm going to start acting like one a bit more.

I've done this before so I've got the experience. I already expect half of you will disagree with me every time I do something and that's okay. Just know in advance that I'm going to decide things and do what I think is right for purposes that answer to my own inclinations and that I'll make no effort beyond which my own curiosity compels me to to listen to contrary opinions.

That said, no more "nigger" references on 4um. Does it offend me? No, but I'm not black so maybe it wouldn't. Does it offend others? Of course. Should it? In my opinion, probably not as much as it does. American culture has certainly demonized the term to a fanatical level, even more so than "shit" and "fuck" to the point where they usually bleep it not with a single asterisk, but four! Would it be better for both blacks and whites if the term wasn't treated with such strong negative reverence? I think so, yes. Is it my job, or the purpose of 4um, to correct American culture on this point? No, it isn't.

Here's the deal: As I'm in charge, I'm semi-responsible for content here. I'm also considering xferring 4um to my own server. As such, its content has the potential to reflect upon me personally. In fact, once it did. I am a software development freelancer and I was showing 4um to a potential client who wanted some web work. At one point, after 30-45 mins of positive discussion, shortly after I referred him to 4um, he suddenly cut off the phone conversation with no explanation and never called me back. My #1 guess is he saw something racial here and was offended and wrongly decided that what he saw was endorsed by me, even though I was only trying to show the technical capabilities of the site. So... someone writing something racial here really did hurt my livelihood. It hurt me personally, in the wallet.

On top of that, such references will discourage most new people from signing up here as most people are decent people, for the most part. And having more people sign up is a good thing, generally. And I won't expect everyone to have a perfect outlook on life to sign up. I don't want someone *overly* offended by the "nigger" word to be dissuaded from joining. The term won't attract new people, it will only push most people away, so I don't want it here. Period, end of story.

I'll make up new rules, and change them, sometimes quite unfairly and without rhyme or reason as we play the game, and I'll do so completely without apology. Thanks and enjoy your day.

I had no clue the Greeks made it to Africa.

That far? No I didn't either. They did make it to Alexandria, Egypt, I believe, named for Alexander the Great.

Neil, you just took the Freedom out of 4um, as much I detest certain language such as your first salvo at censorship.

Thanks for the opinion. I would compare it to cleaning up the house a bit before inviting guests over. Sure you could leave your dirty underwear in the kitchen, but if you do, people will see that and just get the wrong impression.

Do you know which books were being burned by the Nazis? ;)

Your point of attention seems to have been lost on some present.

It is indeed Pings sandbox. When one person decides to...censor... ONLY SELECTED WORDS OR TERMS... then freedom of speech is gone.

Decision is his, censor ALL hurtful or offensive words or get out of the censoring business.

Well, this half Irish-Scottish Redneck - half German Jew; full-on Child of God by grace through faith in Jesus Christ... married to a Negra with a mulatta child... remembers all too well how the agenda at Freeperville turned that place into a Zionist censorship crap-hole of what I consider a den of Zionist World Order bloodthirsty statists.

I stopped posting at faceberg and all of their subsidiaries as well because they simply promote statism and of the Zionist World Empire flavor.

That's the next stop on this slope; the offended will be coming out of the wordwork and freedom of speech will simply stop to exist here as it did on ALL the other stops along the way.

I am heading back to part-part-time lurker mode myself.

For sure. Egypt was just a stone's throw over the Mediterranean. The Greek learned the idea of the Pythagorean principle from the Egyptians. The story of Atlantis was passed on by Solon who learned it from Egyptian priests. Herodotus wrote extensively on the culture and history of Egypt.

The English name of the place comes from Greek: "Aigyptos." (Hwt- ka-Ptah (ḥwt-ka-ptḥ), meaning "home of the ka (soul) of Ptah", the name of a temple to the god Ptah at Memphis. - Arabisch.nu) The Egyptian called their land "Kemit."

The last dynasty of Ancient Egypt was Greek as was the last pharaoh, Cleopatra.

So yeah, these folks were well acquainted with one another, but the average Greek didn't vacation at Giza way back when.

Encyclopedia User Sues Over Word

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (1995)

A man who says he was offended by the ability of a CD-ROM encyclopedia to find racial slurs in its own text has sued the encyclopedia's publisher in Federal District Court in Los Angeles for $40 million.

The plaintiff, Thomas D. Wallace of Omaha, says he and his sons suffered emotional distress after finding the word "nigger" in the Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia, published by Compton's Newmedia of Carlsbad, Calif. The suit also names Compton's owner, the Tribune Company of Chicago, and Best Buy, the store that sold Mr. Wallace the software.

Mr. Wallace, who is black, said he discovered the slur when he inadvertently typed "nigger" while searching for references to the Niger River. In response, the computer found references under "Drama," "Martin Luther King Jr.," "Black Americans or African Americans" and "English Literature."

It seems you 5 have taken exception to "the decree", all done so respectably, which I appreciate.

If you think this is on a slippery slope or starts down a road that will end with a partnership between 4um and CNN, you either forgot who I am, or never knew who I am. I never would have lifted a finger to start up Liberty Post, much less 4um if I were never interested in creating an arena for airing conflicting views. I love hearing people explain their views when they differ from my own, though admittedly only when I have patience and time to do so, which is no different from any other project or activity I engage in. When Sally approached me in 2002 about starting LP, it was THEN I was naive, thinking that everyone was like me and valued discussion of differences and wanted to improve their thinking. But no, not everyone is like that. And that's one thing I did learn from LP. Everyone is totally convinced they are right and everyone else is wrong, and the only point of posting to a discussion forum is so people can get jollies from insulting and harassing people who disagree. At least that's what some people do. I don't see that here so much but certainly it's the norm with some over on LibertysFlame.

I suppose I may not be the idealistic purist that I used to be. Then again, I'm not so sure. You see, "Free Speech" is an illusion. Why, because there's nothing free in life. Speech comes at a cost. What cost are you paying to post here? What cost am I paying? Right now, your freedom of speech here comes at a bigger monetary cost to the person paying to host the site (not me at present), and if *I* am the one who's going to be tasked and held responsible for the content, then any time anyone here calls black people "niggers" then it's not you, hiding behind anonymous screen names who is accountable. It's me. Your "free speech", for me, isn't quite so free.

There is something I have done before, though I can't remember at this sitting. You can look up a domain name and get it's IP address (simple enough) but then you can take that IP address and get a list of all web sites being hosted at that IP address. That is, ultimately, the Achilles heel for me. Even though I'm also behind a screen name, content here IS tracable to me, to **my** livelihood and my personal reputation. Not yours, unless I choose to expose it via your email addr which I won't do.

"Free Speech"? Any forum, any newspaper, any magazine is "free speech" for only one person. The owner. That's it. So when I, as "sheriff" say I don't want a certain type of speech on 4um, that is NOT so much a suppression of your free speech, but is an exercise of MY free speech.

You see, I *have* learned a few things over the years, both from my time running LP way back in the day. I know both sides of the coin, both as a guest poster AND a forum owner, and because of that, I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying that my understanding of "free speech" probably runs deeper than 99.9% of everyone who has ever posted on FR, LP, LF or 4um.

I do have very strong libertarian ideals and I would model 4um rules around those ideals. Will it mean this will be a perfect place to say anything you want? No. If you want that, start your own forum. Otherwise, perfection won't be had anywhere else you look.

Life is not perfect. But I do believe life is about growing and learning, and I would have 4um be that kind of a place, if only in a very small way. But the bottom line is that no one has unlimited patience to wade through all manner of talk they find insulting to see the merit of what some people have to say, and there are millions upon millions of people for whom "nigger" is a deal breaker in discussing anything at all, and that this would be perhaps indicative of their own immaturity or similar doesn't change that fact. Believing otherwise is a fiction, and if any of us were to claim they don't have there own similar limitations with other kinds of talk, I would call them a liar.

Thanks for hearing me out.

4ums first post: freedom4um.com/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=1

911 happened in 2001, of course. At that time FR was the only game in town. By early 2002, anyone who wasn't in favor of invading Aphghanistan and Iraq was a liberal getting banned. Sally was big over there and she d idn't like the suppression so she ended up taling to me about a competing forum. LP came on-line around the fall of 2002. Disenchantment with that, including my own conduct as I ran it, led to another spinoff called Freedom Underground someone else created. Disenchantment with that led yet again to a 3rd competing site (a fourth discussion forum site) which is this one. The "4" in "4um" is, in addition to the pun, a playful reference to it being the 4th discussion forum site after FR, LP and FU.

I quit running LP around 2004, having had enough of trying to arbitrate disputes and such and deciding who to ban and what content to allow. Chrissy wanted her own discussion forum so I converted the LP code to a generic version which is what it is today. Chrissy left a few years ago but without formally turning it over to anyone else so it was by default left to the person who is currently hosting it. I more recently offered to that person and Chrissy to take control of 4um and received the blessing.

Now you know the rest of the story, in true Paul Harvey style.

So it's been almost 14 years, virtually without incident. Ergo 4um as we know it is fine for those purposes except people don't want to see the word "nigger" in headlines.

I can easily go along with that, even though it's a standard English word deeply ingrained in the culture -- and I'm sure everybody else can too. Fortunately you don't seem to mean the un-libertarian, un-sheriff-like things you've said since I carelessly caused this dustup (for which I apologize), so all should be cool.

Thanks for your articulate post and for your years shepherding this forum along. This place was a good one for me in locating daily headlines of interest and for getting others' take on big events and on how those events were covered. I always got a big kick out of the way a lot of the hardass personalities that hang out here reacted to the news posted here day to day.

I've had to take a long break from this because of work I was involved in and because of a growing undertone of contentiousness taking hold here that at times was getting kind of rough. Contention is the name of the game on a forum like this and I long stuck with it for the reason that alternative sites - which I won't mention here - are dominated by a kind of wet blanket intolerance of opinion that won't stand for any mention of really hot topics like well-known false flags and the attacks of September 11, 2001.

This poster is not perfect by a long shot, but he finds his limit at the gratuitous slinging of epithets when the discussion gets down to essential differences. It is no fun participating in discussions that get sucked into two-liner shit fests and cheesy name calling. I do not find myself particularly handicapped at the prohibition of a single word. It's a word that I don't feel the need to use. But then there are a lot of words that I don't feel the need to use in a one on one.

So forgive me if I suggest that it might be a little late to ban that six letter word that Africans seem to use with impunity, but if it helps you move this project along, well, I won't bitch. And much like I heard today while waiting at the hardware checkout today I'll say, "Thanks, Pinguinite, for your service." I know that you have done a helluva lot more to keep 4um afloat than I have. Keep on truckin'.

I like your post too, Randge. But you and others have mentioned the problem of contentiousness in this thread, and I just don't see it.

On returning to 4um few months ago I found it massively changed -- delightfully collegial in fact. The gratuitous viciousness that plagued it before was gone -- until recently when one asinine curmudgeon has popped up. There's also one person who razzes another about certain posts, but this is nothing compared to previously AND to some other forums I've seen.

I understand there were major wars of ego and viewpoint years ago before I discovered 4um, IIRC resulting in people leaving in droves, but think some who were here then may still be thinking of 4um in those terms when it's not the case.

Bringing you democracy, or else! there were strains of VD that were incurable, and they were first found in the Philippines and then transmitted to the Korean working girls via US military. The 'incurables' we were told were first taken back to a military hospital in the Philippines to quietly die. – 4um

What if I said in response to your post that you're sick and in need of professional help?

I know that wouldn't sit well witchu. I also know that a comment like that doesn't move the discussion along in a meaningful way.

Contention is OK. It's what makes the forum run. But slapping your neighbor upside the head is no fun. It's just crude.

I been away a while. Hopefully things have got more "civilized" of late.

BTW, have you heard that a witness to the Seth Rich murder has popped up who has been vetted by a Secret Service polygraph and who will testify that a DEA agent and an ATF employee were the assailants?

Corsi and Jones and Bill Still are on it among others.

Somebody needs to post on this. I'm strapped for time.

Will all other slurs still remain tolerated? Just curious. As a student of the RSDB I do enjoy utilizing a variety of expressions to demean a person or a thing and I would encourage others to use their brain when insulting someone rather than just relying on time old and time worn insults. Put some zest on it.

For those curious about potential alternative words I now refer you too

The Racial Slur Database, since 1999. Not copyrighted in any way, shape or form. This database was created entirely from data gleaned off the 'net and via submissions from people like you and your parents. It's supposed to be funny and/or informational. Calm down.

And that was just one letter of our alphabet...

It true tyrannical fashion, I'm going to make things up as we go along.

As you can see from this thread, I've used the word "nigger" numerous times. As with guns, it's not them, it's how they are used.

If you like me, and want to get along with me, instead of looking for rules, you'll understand what I want to have here and play accordingly.

You know I suggested Gem as a slur for one specific ethno type but they still aint updated it. Aw well. Anyways like I said, I was just curious, but that answer was hilarious.

Nah, I care more about talking about 1st amendment audits these days. And we got all kinds, Normal, trans, black, unknown, all kinds, cause at the end of the day it about about anything more than being an American and using your American rights to film public servants in public places in accordance with our first amendment rights... We are picking up the first so we dont have to resort to the second.... Although when a pig pulls a gun on kids because he fears for his life as he squishes another kids head.... Did you see that shit in elpaso? and people are giving the kids shit for swearing at the cop but I say FUCK THAT, id be swearing at the blue isis pig too. Coward has to pull a gun on kids because their swearing might hurt him, Blue line privilege has got to end.

I used to do some dancing like that when I was young and fit, but I wore cowboy boots when dancing. That was at the old Country Music Inn in Illinois. It is long gone now since they closed it down because the property was worth more than the annual revenues. Now there is a UPS store sitting on the corner of where CMI used to be.

Many places closed up for the same reason including the old Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago. They turned that place into an industrial park.

Sally was big over there and she d idn't like the suppression so she ended up taling to me about a competing forum. LP came on-line around the fall of 2002.

I know about LP. There were quite a few freaks on there, including BAC. I got banned from there long ago. Sorry Sally is dead now but doo-doo happens. ;)
