A delegation of 30 South African farming families has arrived in Russia’s farmbelt Stavropol Region, Rossiya 1 TV reports. The group says it is facing violent attacks and death threats at home.

Up to 15,000 Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa, are planning to move to Russia amid rising violence stemming from government plans to expropriate their land, according to the delegation.

“It’s a matter of life and death – there are attacks on us. It’s got to the point where the politicians are stirring up a wave of violence,” Adi Slebus told the media. “The climate here [Stavropol Region] is temperate, and this land is created by God for farming. All this is very attractive.”

The new South African government, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has pledged to return the lands owned by white farmers since the 1600s to the black citizens of the country. The government said it is planning to put an end to what it calls the legacy of apartheid, where most of South Africa’s land is still in the hands of its minority white population.

Rights groups have said the initiative incites violence. There were 74 farm murders and 638 attacks, primarily against white farmers, in 2016-17 in South Africa, according to data by minority rights group AfriForum.

The farmers are prepared to make a contribution to Russia’s booming agricultural sector, according to Rossiya 1. Each family is ready to bring up to $100,000 for leasing the land.

Russia has 43 million hectares of unused farmland, and has recently begun giving out free land to Russian citizens to cultivate farming. The land giveaway program, which began in 2014, has been a huge success.

It is likely a good move since Putin has said he would give free land to anyone that wants to move there.

Something just popped into my head. One time when at Country Music Inn in NW suburban Chicago, there were 3 guys in there that were from South Africa.

They said they didn't understand how the U.S. came to be from coast to coast.

We were using my body as a map, left side was east coast and right was west coast. In the middle was Mid-West.

One of them pointed below my belt and said, "What's down there?"

I said, "That's Mexico. We don't go there." ROTFLMAO!

I don't think that free land is what the Boers have in mind. They are used to good farmland in a warm climate and are prepared to spend real money to lease it.

Free is free and they should not look a gift horse in the mouth. Whether or not they lease the land is up to them. But I am sure even if the get free land, leased or not, they will owe some real estate taxes on it since that is how the local government gets their operating money. ;)

Don't know the details of real estate taxes but many Europeans want to immigrate to Russia because of its low taxes.

That would not surprise me in the least. After all, Putin does not ride around with hordes of Secret Service types in his entourage. And people there are not allowed to own firearms. So you get my point? They have no Second Amendment in Russia. If they try to implement the U.N. Small Arms Treaty here it may start a new Revolution.

I talked with the woman who runs Good Samaritan shop here in town. She apparently has some relatives in Australia. She told me, "Oh, they have their guns." I am sure they do and I hope they keep them. ;)

Wouldn't think the Boer farmers would have to worry much about taxes on agricultural land. From the Wiki:

Land tax is the only local tax in Russia: its rates are set by municipal authorities (excluding the federal cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, where the rates are set by city legislators). The maximum rate is 0.3 percent on lands zoned for agriculture, housing and dachas, and 1.5 percent on other lands.
