I've got myself a nice Win7 mini-laptop -- a reconditioned Dell Latitude 2110. Can't get it to connect to the net so far -- it asked for my Charter username and password and accepted them, but just can't do it. Yes, I tested the net cable on the other puter -- works fine. This is a beautiful little machine but has a sort of cylinder running along the back bottom edge. Wasn't expecting that, don't want it -- but this machine has a touchpad (a must for me) and you don't find that on all of these by any means.

Ask Youtube, I'm sure some kid has a tutorial just for that problem.

Good luck with it.

Sure, there are 3 for Win10, 5 for wireless, one that types the info at a character per second (not including corrections), one that finds a different problem than mine halfway thru.....

Drivers seem to be fine on my machine. There are no yellow warning icons on either choice under Network adapters.

The puter recognizes that I'm plugging the ethernet in, it just can't connect after going thru the usual motions. The internet icon in the system tray does have the yellow warning triangle over it, so obviously I shouldn't have tried to log in.

I'm sure one of you has the answer at my fingertips.

After more dickering, puter tells me '"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. Not fixed' -- whatever that means. It's not the router -- it's working fine.

My Apple desktop is wired directly to algore's interweb, so I'm less than no help with laptops of any genre. Have you called Comcast to walk you through establishing a connection? I had to call TimeWarner for help when my router/modem failed and they sent a new one here.

The connection is fine, so Charter's doing its job (aside from only delivering a fraction of the bandwidth to customers it contracts to). Somebody here will have a substantive suggestion eventually.

Charter? I'm sorry I thought Comcast. Charter is the same as TWC, which will soon be ATT. Our TWC experience, except for the unholy monthly bill, has been excellent. A few months back, I got their new two-piece router/modem setup and it's really been nice. Down speed, which is all that I care about is consistently 225-235Mbps: fast enough for my purposes. speedtest.net is where I check it.

No. How would we do it from that page? And why would one be needed for this.

I tried searching 'internet' and 'ethernet' as keywords but it found nothing. Tried 'network' since puters seem to insist on equating it with internet and it found these, but I have no idea what they're for:

Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Controller Driver

Intel WIMAX 6250 Driver

Dell Wireless WLAN 1397 Half MiniCard (4312bg), Wireless WLAN 1520 Half MiniCard, Wireless WLAN 1501 Half Mini-Card (4313bgn), Dell Wireless 1397, 15xx Half MiniCard, v.5.60.48.35, A36

Sorry. When I have an I/O problem, I usually try to refresh the drivers which can get corrupted. I see you can't do that directly, but you could upload them from the website onto a stick and install them over the USB.

If you can't manage that you probably need to find someone that can do hands on diagnostics. You could have a hardware difficulty. I'd refer that problem to the seller. They owe you a machine that works.

Sooooo, are you all ready for the solution to the mystery?

'Twas something so moronically simple that I'd lambasted the seller for even suggesting it halfway back in the whole drama.

Something I should have tried on my own just for the heck of it as soon as the "problem" showed up -- even tho' it would have seemed totally laffable.

The fixer called and said the 2 puters were all set and ready to go.

I'm thinking OH BOY, I'LL SEND THAT EBAY FAKER THE BILL!

But there were no fixes as it turned out. He said with Charter you have to power cycle the router the first time you plug a "new" puter into the it.

Let us THINK, my droogs, before we sound off. THINK before we spend any money on a problem -- then think 3 more times for good measure. This little adventure cost me $50.... meanwhile, thanks again for your input. 48 views, I'm gratified -- now let'see some more on my stellar news postings....???? I'm mostly here for conversation.

Oh, this puter's a gas -- my 1st SSD. Fixer even commented on its quickness above and beyond that factor.

Seller's offering one more of the best laptop ever, also souped up (including extra RAM) for $100 less than I paid

LOL, I've been unplugging routers since that day I wrapped one in a diaper and got arrested and

Ok, none of that really happened, except having to reset routers. Ma Bell carpeted my neighborhood with fiber optics earlier this year.

It has never been down, best I can tell.

If your local utility offers you fiber optics, take it!

I'm jealous, regardless.

Very interesting! How common is fiber optic net now? How much more is it costing you?

Seemingly about 30 years ago the first inkling I heard was the Fiber Optic Network brand of phone service which was supposedly available most everywhere. Always wondered how that would be possible -- IIRC their lines were underground. They sent you a FON card for calling from phone booths because that was the initials with a macron over the vowel to make it pronounced like "phone".

$80/month. Plan is to string it everywhere economically feasible. My Indpls working class neighborhood got it before other areas my fancier friends live in, precisely because more customers per miles of moonbeam cable.

Are you fucking with me? Of course it's faster, it's light speed. Because it is light. Fiber Optics have been run to most US cities, it's that last mile going over DSL/Coax/twisted pair that is the bottleneck.

I usually connect at 235 down, and simply cannot imagine what 600+ more speed would be like. Television? Goog promises 1G down, but I won't live to see it in this 'hood.

If Ma Bell has any work crews near you, feed them, or at least offer tea.

My best speed on the old coax was about 40. That was $94/mo best I recall.

and it was down several hours a week.

Fiber Optics

They have been putting fiber optic cables in all around here. I am on AT&T wireless now and it is fast. Certainly faster than dial up. ;)
