To investigate, the programme travels the world to follow scientists scouring southern Australia, Nevada's Death Valley and Alaskan glaciers for tantalising clues as to how our planet ran away into this doomsday scenario. 99% of all species that ever existed are now extinct. Of course, that's not an exact figure. I would guess even a thinner margin, considering the millions of different species over billions of years. Factor in 8.7 million species that exist today, and even a few thousands of that is still billions.
