1977 – Tandy Corporation announces the TRS-80, one of the world's first mass-produced personal computers. The TRS-80 Micro Computer System (TRS-80, later renamed the Model I to distinguish it from successors) is a desktop microcomputer launched in 1977 and sold by Tandy Corporation through their Radio Shack stores. The name is an abbreviation of Tandy/Radio Shack, Z-80 microprocessor. It was one of the earliest mass-produced and mass-marketed retail personal computers. The TRS-80 featured a full-stroke QWERTY keyboard, the new Zilog Z80 processor (rather than the more common Intel 8080), 4 KB DRAM standard memory (when many 8-bit computers shipped with only 1 KB RAM), small size and desk footprint, floating-point BASIC programming language, standard 64-character/line video monitor, and a starting price of US$600 (equivalent to US$2400 in 2017).

It was almost twenty years later that I had my first desktop. Windows 3.11, what a dog it was, but I was hooked.

We had TRS-80's in a computer class in High School, must have been 1980 or so. No discs, everything was stored on a cassette recorder.

Whoa! thanks, I'd never heard of that.

From cassette recorders to SSDs to who knows what's next for us.

My first computer was purchased in 1987 maybe 88. Expensive back then and an Apple product. I can't think of the model name at the moment. Let me look it up.

Macintosh SE with dual floppies and no hard drive. I installed one later on. Price was in the $3,000 range. Ouch! I made decent money back then.

That's interesting; earlier this year I got the latest iMac27, it was barely under $3700. Inflation over the decades has kept the price about the same.

Yikes Lod. I had to buy a new 'puter about 2 years ago, brand new about $250. Just the box, already have kb/mon/mouse. The one I had before that just fried, but it was probably 8 years old or so. I think I paid like 700 for it, and another 300 for more memory and better video and sound cards. Not a super high end machine even for the time, but damned good. Once it blinked out and I knew I had to replace it, I asked myself if it was worth spending the extra money for a machine that could handle really huge, high end video games. I'd already pretty much lost interest in them, so the answer was no.

The only game I really miss is Midtown Madness 2, can't get it to run on Win10, or even Win7 best I recall. Jumping a Mustang halfway across San Francisco was about the coolest thing one can do on a computer, video game wise anyway.

My old faithful Dell laptop cost me about $315 on sale at the end of its life cycle. I believe I've had it 4 years and more now.
