Heart disease causes the deaths of over half a million people in the U.S. annually, which totals a quarter of all deaths in men and women each year. Approximately three quarters of a million U.S. heart deaths are from heart attack - most of these are first time heart attacks.

The definition of myocardial infarction is the medical term for heart attack.

When the heart suddenly stops beating, it is referred to as a sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest stops the blood from flowing to vital organs, including the brain.

The many symptoms of heart disease include:

- fatigue, - weakness, - shortness of breath, - dizziness, - palpitations, - chest discomfort and/or pain, - chest heaviness, - nausea, - vomiting, and - pain that radiates to the jaw, arm, or throat.

Sometimes heart disease causes no symptoms at all.

People with the symptoms above persisting for longer than five minutes should call 9-1-1 immediately for emergency medical care. Your doctor should be notified for symptoms lasting less than five minutes. Urgent evaluation and care is key in preventing injury and death.

Heart disease is the leading killer of women, leading to more women dying each year than all cancer deaths combined! Older women are more likely to have heart disease, however all women should be screened for prevention and early treatment.

Risk factors are conditions or habits that make a person more likely to develop a disease. They can also increase the chances that an existing disease will get worse. Important risk factors for heart disease are:

- High blood pressure - High blood cholesterol - Diabetes - Smoking - Being overweight - Lack of exercise - Having a family history of early heart disease - Age (55 or older for women)

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is significantly impaired. A stroke that results from inadequate blood supply to the brain is referred to as an ischemic stroke. When a blood vessel to the brain breaks open and bleeds, it causes a hemorrhagic stroke.

The most common form of heart disease in the U.S. is coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD causes heart attacks because the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle is inadequate. Lifestyle changes and medications can reduce the risk of CAD

Chest pain that is a result of poor blood supply and oxygen to the heart muscle is called angina.

The most common form of heart disease in the U.S. is coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD causes heart attacks because the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle is inadequate.

And it seems the cause of CAD is excessive sugar in the blood stream as sugar irritates the blood veins which the body naturally remedies by shielding the veins with cholesterol, resulting in CAD. (Or so goes the theory).

Then they blame the cholesterol and prescribe satin drugs to cut down on your cholesterol levels.

Research 'cholesterol hoax' if you con't believe.

Just had heart surgery last week. At my age I am used to not feeling well. Not feeling well to me is just a normal day.

Then I started feeling like there was a weight sitting on my chest making it hard for me to breath. Didn't hurt, but felt like somebody was sitting on my chest.

The pressure was pretty steady, but not painful,so I ignored it for 3 days, hoping it would just go away.

It didn't,so on the 3rd day I stopped by a local rescue squad on my way home from the grocery store to have the EMT's check my blood pressure. The guy says,"Why not get a EKG while we are at it?",and since it was free,I told them to go for it.

Normal hearts beat between 79-83 beats per minute. Mine was doing that mostly, but would suddenly drop down to 20 beats per minute for several beats before jumping back up to the normal range.

The EMT told me I needed to get to the ER ASAP,"so why don't we go now?". I agreed,so off we went.

Come to find out the left artery going to my heart had a 80 to 90 percent blockage. They kept me in the hospital for the next 2 days and the pressure didn't come back and my heartbeat remained in the normal range,so I insisted they let me go home until the day of my scheduled surgery. They gave me various meds to take between then and the surgery, and sent me home. I saw no reason for me to stay in the hospital and run up an insane bill while waiting a week for a scheduled surgery.

The surgery itself was no big deal from my POV. I wasn't even unconscious and watched it on a video screen. Didn't really understand what I was seeing, but it was interesting to watch.

Not even any pain or discomfort once they tapped into the artery at my groin. I felt nothing as the clots were dissolved and the stent went in,and in truth felt no real pain while in recovery. They did insist on keeping me overnight in case the artery started leaking, but who can argue with that?

The operation was a week ago today. No real pain from the surgery, but did have some chest discomfort and pressure as I recovered. Started to get enough pressure to concern me a couple of days after the surgery, and on the 3rd day I was so concerned about it that I did a web search to see if it was possible to dislodge a stent because I was worried I MAY have done that the day before the pressure started by weedwhacking for a hour despite the docs telling me to not do anything for a week.

The pressure in my chest really had me concerned, and then it dawned on me to try a old "trick" I came up with years ago to see if chest pains were heart related,or related to pressure from gas in the stomach putting pressure on the diaphragm and lungs.

I went to the refrigerator and got a bottle of pepsi out and started chugging it. I got about 3 "glubs" down before the explosions started as the carbonated water hit the gas. Must have repeated this process at least 3 times to get it all out,but it was worth it and a HELL of a lot cheaper than another visit to the ER.

I am GUESSING the gas came from all the bland food I had been eating.

Regardless of what caused the gas to form, chugging a Pepsi (coke and others seem to be less carbonated) to see if it is gas or a heart attack is something you can do for yourself at home before dialing 9-11 if you think you are having a heart attack. If it's gas,the relief is instant. If the relief isn't instant, make that 9-11 call!

Anyhow,it has been a week today, and I just started feeling better yesterday. You would THINK that going from having a artery that was 80 to 90 percent blocked to not having an artery unblocked would instantly make you feel better, but it didn't work like that in the real world for me.

I am GUESSING this is related to the pills I have to take for 30 days causing this, but am just guessing. I do know I am feeling better now,but not any better than before the pressure started. I am hoping this gets better as time passes and I finally get off all the extra meds I have to take for the next 3 weeks.

And who knows what damage will happen to my heart when I start getting the bills in?

Still,PLEASE be aware that getting a heart stent put in is no big deal, but NOT getting one if you need it is a VERY big deal. There is no pain to speak of,and you only need to spend 1 night in the hospital. If you doc says you need it,get it!

I'm glad you pulled through that well, and thanks for sharing everything.

Perhaps you had that angioplasty thing where they put a thin wire into the artery with a small balloon on the end, then inflate it to mash the buildup flat so its out of the way of blood flow?

Could be. I remember watching the dye seem to "explode" the clots were removed. I never did see what caused the "explosions",though.

They also showed me the stent. I fint it almost impossible to believe they could inject something that big into your groin to end up near your heart without you feeling it moving. I didn't feel a thing and was conscious the whole time.

Truthfully, the most painful part of the whole process was the surgeon squeezing my groin to get the artery to pop up so he could stick a needle in it.

There was no pain during recovery, either. No need for pain pills, either. Which I like because I believe the more you take them the less effective they are,and I really and truly do understand there is a level of pain I call "I want my mama!",and when you hit THAT level, you are in desperate need of something that not only works well, but works well RIGHT NOW!

Maybe the entrance point depends on the location in the heart where the treatment is to be conducted.

Glad things were taken care of last week. I hope you feel better than you do. Thanks for the details of your ordeal. I don't get the Pepsi thing so I'll reread your posting.

Won't Medicare cover most of it? Does VA pick up the rest? I'm not very fluent on these things and go to assigned experts the few times I've needed.

It was the coronary stent angioplasty, but the thing I remember the most is watching the dye just "explode" through the blockage and scatter/dissolve it.

Then went in through my groin on the right side despite the blockage being on my left side. I have no idea why,but I guess it;s just doctor preferences.

I don't get the Pepsi thing so I'll reread your posting.

Pepsi is highly carbonated, and gas bubbles in your stomach swell and put a lot of pressure on your diaphragm, which puts pressure on your chest and makes it hard to breath.

Pressure on your chest is pressure on your heard.

Chugging Pepsi makes you burp, and burping releases the gas and the pressure. Instant "fix" for chest pains and shallow breathing,as well as instant reassurance you aren't having a heart attack.

Won't Medicare cover most of it? Does VA pick up the rest?

Medicare will pay 80 percent of it,but doesn't pay for the drugs. Since I am a 100 percent service-connected disabled vet,the VA will pay the whole ticket, but ONLY IF I get advance approval for the operation first. Since I didn't have time to do this, chances are they aren't going to pay any of it.

They didn't pay a dime when my gall bladder burst at 1 AM one night and I damn near died before I could get to the ER 30 miles away. The VA said I should have gone to the VA hospital almost 70 miles away and let them determine if I needed emergency surgery or not,and where to get it. If I had tried that,I would have died.

They didn't pay a dime on my emergency flesh-eating bacteria surgery and 11 days in intensive care, either. Same story. I should have either got approval in advance for a deadly disease I didn't even have yet,or die going to the VA hospital. Had 4 emergency surgeries in 5 or 6 years, and the VA didn't pay a dime.

I did have 2 scheduled cancer surgeries at a local hospital, and never even got a bill. Got them approved in advance with no trouble, and the VA paid every nickel of the bills.

The VA is 10,000 times better than it was 20 years ago,but it is still a bureaucracy.

Yogurt at the end of the day seems to minimize gas production.

CBD oil can help with this, as well as just about any other bodily problems we may have.
