The FN FAL is one of the greatest battle rifles ever made. Politics caused the U.S. to pass on it while nearly every other NATO country in the world recognized its superiority. And the 7.62 NATO is one of the greatest battle rounds ever made. But we needed an intermediate round. Here's the story.

I have been telling people ever since I heard somebody woke up and decided our military needed a long range round for fighting in Shitstainistan that is someone would put ME in charge of new battle rifle procurement I could solve their problem in just a few minutes, and likely save them tens of millions of dollars at the same time.

I would just pick up the phone, call FN and say "I need an initial order of 2,000 FN-FAL rifles chambered for the 7x57 round, spare magazines, bayonets, cleaning kits, and spare parts. When can I expect delivery?"

There are a LOT of different weight 7mm bullets to chose from, and with the FAL adjustable gas system, they will shoot them all without hiccuping.

No need to keep re-inventing the damn wheel!

BTW,the .308 is a great round, but the 7x57 mm round is better for bucking wind across valleys at long ranges. When you move up to the longer boat tail heavy bullets in 30 caliber, you need the case capacity of the magnums for long shots.

Were you a weapons specialist when you were stationed in Laos? ;)

I wasn't stationed in Laos. There were no US troops stationed in Laos.

I just ran recon and other missions there, and in Cambodia, another place there were no US troops stationed.

My job title was either assistant recon team leader,or Hatchet Force squad leader.I developed a serious case of wheezing and coughing from sleeping on the wet ground in the rain for a week or so at a time in the mountains, and you can't do this or snore and continue to run recon. So I switched over to platoon operations. The NVA always pretty much knew where we were anyhow because we were attacking them or blocking their troop movements.

Each SF team has two weapons specialists, but the truth is weapons are such a basic part of the job that everybody is a weapons specialist, just like everybody knows how to operate the radios, call in air strikes, set up demo ambushes, and apply first aid to the wounded. It's all a part of the same job.

I hear you on that.

When we were at Woodstock 94 we had to be in there the first night because they opened the gates and the crowd was coming in.

These three guys were drunk and got in the wheel chair potties that were fenced on three sides. They couldn't figure out how to get out so they climbed on top of one of the potties and jumped over the fence.

One guy broke his ankle. His friends were telling him, "Don't worry. We'll sell your ticket."

I think that was the last time they could get an ATV in the place. LOL
