Interesting part of WW II history. Poorly made and cheap. Jammed a lot.

From what I once read on another gun forum, any jamming was almost always due to mishandling the magazines and dinging/bending the magazine lips. It fires from an open bolt, pretty fool-proof.

This is true of ALL self-loading weapons. True, some have much stronger magazines than others, but bent magazine lips or weak springs are almost always the prime reasons for jams or failure to feed episodes.

It fires from an open bolt, pretty fool-proof.

Say WHAT? That is a system that practically guarantees failure to chamber. Weapons that fire from open bolts are susceptible to trash getting into the chamber as well as the magazine feed lips.

Some squirt guns, like the old US M3 "greasegun" have a pretty secure ejection port cover that snaps into place and keeps trash out of the chamber while also serving as a pretty fool-proof safety, but the drawback is they are slow to bring to firing position, and that can get the user killed in combat. They also make a LOT of noise when you disengage the cover,so troops in ambush position or awaiting an assualt are prone to leaving the cover open and the bolt locked to the rear.

Yeah,it is a trade-off. Having the bolt lock to the rear is advantageous in that it helps cool the weapon when it's not being fired, and this helps prevent "slam fires".

It is also an advantageous design because open bolt weapons are a LOT cheaper and simpler to manufacture and repair.

The obvious disadvantages are it makes for lousy accuracy and increases the likelyhood of jams due to the bolt staying open.

I admit to having a suppressed M3 to carry on POW snatch missions in VN,but it was strictly for special missions. I figured since I would have to be carrying a weapon loaded with sub-sonic rounds anyhow,I would rather be shooting a full-powered 45 ACP round than a downloaded round in 9mm Luger.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.
