Poster Comment: Has a man-made structure ever effected you emotionally or spiritually? It's something I've been thinking about since I discovered Second Empire plans nail what I would do, given a budget.

Being from/in California, I kinda like the concept of the geodesic or monolithic dome. The Monolithic Dome is a permanent structure which is energy efficient, cost effective, disaster resistant and attractive. Monolithic Domes have real strength. They can withstand the force of a tornado, hurricane or earthquake. They cannot burn, rot or be eaten by bugs. The Monolithic Dome is energy efficient. We watched this stunning chapel being built as we traveled to Taos over the years. From what I understand, most of the Labor was donated, and the view of it from the Rio Grande valley is surreal. The Stations of the Cross bronze sculptures on the trail up to the chapel are soul moving (and a good running trail to blow off the long drive). San Luis Colorado (the oldest town in Co)- if you go there you are making a mistake by not seeing the profound chapel built there. Stunning in it's old world simplicity and the views are..............

Found it. It's the "Carson House," and it is indeed in Eureka, California. It was built 1884-1886 by Samuel Newsom & Joseph C. Newsom for William Carson. What kind of people would build such monstrous looking stuff? William Carson was a lumber baron, who made his fortune logging the beautiful old growth California redwood trees. No wonder he had such a Satanic looking house built! ;)

I love the old Gothic cathedrals. I was raised as a Catholic so it's part of my background (of course, some of the old Protestant churches in Europe are pretty Gothified too). I love the way they soar to such heights, and have such a lacy look about them. I love the rose windows and stain glass and the gargoyles, and the sense of peace and quiet in the dark inside. I love that subtle smell of incense and all the statues and candles. A lot of churches have gone to electric candles now and it's just not the same. Other than that....I basically like pretty much anything old except the Aztec/Maya stuff - creeps me out. I guess it makes me think of human sacrificies.

Looks like a very quiet and peaceful place. The chapel is. San Luis has a homecomming day that is celebrated by a bunch of family fued (sp) fights, according to my San Luis friends. They usually laugh it off the next day or century.
Wow, that's a beauty!!! The great thing about old buildings like that is their PERSONALITY which comes through in all the fine details and workmanship. Modern buildings are almost uniformly bland, if not hideous because they are totally lacking in details (and the scale is inhuman). I hate modern architecture.
