Illegal immigrants rise to 12 million, 5 percent of all workers

March 11, 2006

- By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The number of illegal immigrants in the United States has grown to as many as 12 million, and they now account for about one in every 20 workers, a new estimate says.

Efforts to curb illegal immigration have not slowed the pace, said a report Tuesday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

Instead, the report's author said, those efforts are having an unintended consequence: People who illegally enter the United States from Mexico are staying longer because it is harder to move back and forth across the border.

"The security has done more to keep people from going back to Mexico than it has to keep them from coming in," said Jeffrey Passel, a senior research associate at the center.

It is difficult to accurately measure the number of illegal immigrants in the United States, but most public agencies and private groups had settled on a figure of about 11 million.

The Pew Hispanic Center used Census Bureau data to estimate that the United States had 11.1 million illegal immigrants in March 2005. The center used monthly population estimates to project a current total of 11.5 million to 12 million.

The report estimates that 850,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in United States each year since 2000.

President Bush has called for a program that would grant temporary worker status to illegal immigrants already here. The House rejected the program and instead passed a border security bill last year that leaned toward lawmakers who were calling for a crackdown.

The Senate is trying to address both border security and the temporary worker program, but consensus has been elusive. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., has said he hopes his panel will produce a bill by the end of March.

There are about 7.2 million undocumented workers in the U.S., or about 5 percent of the country's work force, the Pew report said.

It is estimated that illegal immigrants fill a quarter of all agricultural jobs, 17 percent of office and house cleaning positions, 14 percent of construction jobs and 12 percent in food preparation.

"Especially if we look at the Mexicans, these are people with fairly low levels of formal education," Passel said. "They're not able to get licensing or credentials in the United States because of their status, so the kinds of jobs available to them in the United States are somewhat limited."

Business leaders and advocates for immigrants' rights argue that America's economy would collapse if all the illegal workers were deported.

"Undocumented immigrants do pay taxes, and they do contribute to the economic, social and cultural developments of their communities," said Peta Ikambana of the American Friends Service Committee. The group was organizing a rally near the Capitol on Tuesday to protest the House bill.

"Just building walls will not stop immigration," Ikambana said. "Those that are here will just go underground."

Steven Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates tougher border enforcement, said he isn't surprised that the number of illegal immigrants continues to climb. He called the government's crackdown halfhearted at best.

Camarota pointed to a recent government report showing that very few businesses are fined for hiring illegal immigrants. The government filed only three notices that it intended to fine companies in 2004, down from 417 notices in 1999, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.

Camarota said there would be plenty of Americans willing to accept jobs done by illegal immigrants if they paid adequate wages and benefits.

Tuesday's report by the Pew Hispanic Center said Mexicans make up 56 percent of illegal immigrants. An additional 22 percent come from other Latin American countries, mainly in Central America. About 13 percent are from Asia, and Europe and Canada combine for 6 percent.

Anyone who believes there are only 12 million illegals in this country should visit the Southwest. Don't forget a spanish dictionary.

Exactly

There are probably 30,000,000+ (30 Million! ) or more wetbacks in this country!

We're being overrun while Bush does nada.

That's getting warmer.

Years ago I remember helping my sons with their paper routes. Early morning in San Diego driving through unfamiliar streets we would frequently see a garage full of illegals getting into vans. Funny, we would see real coyotes too, looking for family cats and sometimes dogs.

Except make them feel more welcomed.

After that amnesty speech a couple years ago, the San Diego border patrol agents reported to the local press that the illegals themselves told them that our El Presidente had invited them. The number of illegals crossing tripled right afterwards.

Once the Rs caved on this issue it was all over. That said, I give up thinking that things will change. The illegal flood will continue despite what the majority (soon to be minority) of the nation wants. Unless whites are willing to form into tight groups like minorities do, kiss this place good-bye.

They get La Raza, whites (non-hispanic - don't you love that category?) can expect problems. The approach and attitude taken could make a difference.

I was recently in the NW and saw *Habitat for Humanity* building free/low-cost housing in such traditionally white areas like Spokane, WA and Sand Point, ID.

Where's my free house?

I also saw that mexican food was becoming trendy in that area. The people are being culturally *inoculated* to accept these useless invaders.

There's a meat packing plant about a mile from me that does case-ready shit for Sam's Club.

They won't hire any locals unless they speak Spanish. A friend of mine lives right next to it. One night last summer I was at his place during break time at the plant and they were outside. You could hear dozens of conversations in Spanish.

It really pissed me off. We've had several factories close here in the last year and those people can't get hired there.

that's how I feel Robin. You live in LA. I live in Phoenix. The mexicans have over-run LA worse than Phoenix. But there's so many mexicans here it's unbelievable. and you know I have several personal friends who came here illegally from mexico anywhere from 20-40 years ago. Some of them don't become legal until after being here 20+ years. The worst part is that the mexicans have a grudge against the gringos, and as they become the majority they exercise that grudge with a vengeance. You'd have to be in the southwest and see it to believe it. the rest of the people in our country don't realize.

that's nothing. I met a fellow and his children last summer. They live in a single family house in a suburb, chandler AZ. The two kids go to public school and all instruction in this suburban public school is in spanish. These are english speaking kids who sit and listen, but understand nothing. all day long. in public school. no education at all for these kids. and these are american kids. and the mexicans get an education. in public school. In Chandler, AZ.

Blog by Cenk Uygur:

I am on vacation in Miami. I go once a year to clear my head. I go to be alone, think, relax and just decompress. Who goes to Miami Beach to be alone? It's like going to Minnesota to get away from the cold.

This year I happened to pick the weekend Spring Break starts for apparently 96% of the colleges in the country. There are more people here than Mexico City (also more people here who speak Spanish). When I used to live in Miami, English was optional. Now it's frowned upon.

Five years ago, stores would have the courtesy of hiring people who knew just enough English to frustrate you. Now, they've given up all pretenses -- no English. None, zero ... nada. I asked "how much" in one store and the lady had no idea what I was talking about. Who works at a store in the United States and doesn't understand the words "how much"?

The tell-tale sign of a third world country is a broken down, unattended car in the middle of the road. It's in the middle of the road -- you know it, I know it, everyone knows it and no one comes to take it away anyway. I saw a car just like that in the middle of Washington Avenue (one of the busiest streets on South Beach) today. I thought its tires were missing but it must have been a mirage.

Also, Washington Avenue is no longer paved. I assume they'll pave it again one day -- probably the same day they move the car. But it causes just the right amount of dirt and dust to complete the "I'm in a country where I shouldn't drink the water" feel.

that is exactly the kind of thing that occurs in So-Cal and in Miami and a few other places. and people in the rest of the country just don't have any idea.

it is so sad.

The mexican immigrants who came here illegally and are now my personal friends learned english and fit in and are not anti-american. But there is an environment developing now among the new immigrants that is very anti-gringo. I try to tell my relatives from Minnesota and they think I'm racist.

That's incredible. Here, there are jobs for "bilingual only" which irritates me enough. And teachers who are bilingual are paid more, according to a teacher I know.

But, at least the salespeople and waitresses/waiters all still speak english.

No wonder blackhorse over on LP is so livid. He's a long time Miami resident.

With Habitat for Humanity, you don't "own" the house per se. You have to sell it at below market to the next Habitat for Humanity person and you do not get to keep ANY of the profits, if there even are any.

Its not exactly the deal they think it is -- as these "homeowners" will find out one day. :-)
