C2C...

An aerospace executive in China has announced plans to launch a satellite which would serve as an artificial moon designed to illuminate a city at night. The unorthodox idea was reportedly revealed by Wu Chunfeng, who heads one of the main contractors for the Chinese space agency, at a conference last week. According to him, the faux moon will hover over the city of Chengdu emitting a "dusk-like glow" which would eliminate the need for street lights. Advertisement

The illumination from the satellite, he said, will be adjustable and could cover an area of land ranging from five to fifty miles in diameter. While the idea may sound fanciful to some, Chungfeng appears to be quite serious about the endeavor, explaining that the concept has been tested extensively for the last few years and now looks to be almost fully feasible. With that in mind, the executive is eying a 2020 launch for the fake moon.

Lest one have concerns about how the illumination will impact wildlife in the area, an aerospace professor was quick to assure Chinese media that it will not be a problem thanks to its similarity in intensity to twilight. Be that as it may, whether the residents of Chengdu want another moon is another matter altogether. Alas, they probably won't have much of a say in the decision, so hopefully they won't mind living under the light of a fake moon.

Puzzling. If it would be a geostationary moon, that would mean putting it 25k miles high and over the Equator, in which case, if it could still be used to illuminate a single city in China, could also be used to light up just about any city in the entire southeast Asian region. To restrict Illumination to a single city and not bother anyone else, the light would need to be laserlike in quality. which would also *help* solve the issue of how much energy this thing would output and where it would come from.

I guess it could be 25k up but not on the equator, just oscillating in orbit over the N hemisphere at night time and letting it go back down into the S hemisphere during the day when it's not needed. Still, energy requirements and light type is a big question.

The artificial moon will act as a nightlight. Similar to the real moon, the artificial one will have a reflective coating that deflects sunlight to the Earth — only it will shine eight times brighter than the real moon, scientists say, according to China Daily. - CBS News

They should just build some Moonlight Towers like Austin did back in the 1890's.

Reminds me of the time I got into an argument with a highschool science teacher who was adamant that Edison invented electric lighting. He had no idea the arclamp had been around since about 1810. I brought in an encyclopedia and was given extra credit.

Edison invented electric lighting.

Nikola Tesla was a master inventor. He gave up his royalties to keep Westinghouse out of bankruptcy. When he passed away, the government confiscated all of his papers which showed that electricity is in the air around us and could be captured for free use. But they want to charge us for this today. ;)

Thanks for the link. But what's stated is even crazier.

Orbital height: 310 miles. This is not sufficient for geostationary purposes, though it is higher than "low earth orbit" which sees satellites circle the earth about once every 90 minutes.

So how long can a reflector orbiting at that altitude say above a city to light it up? If it has a orbital period of 3 hours, then it can probably can only light up a single place on earth for maybe 15 minutes per orbit, and that assumes it goes over China on every loop, which is very questionable. I don't know the numbers but at 310 miles altitude, it's impossible for it to not be circling the earth.

#2: The earth is about 8000 miles in diameter, (radius is about 4000 miles) and this mirrored device will be another 310 miles up, so that's about 7.8% farther away from earth's center than is the surface of the earth. What's that say about how often this thing will be in the shadow of the earth and unable to reflect anything? Especially in the winter when the sun is over the S hemisphere putting China much closer to the opposing side of the earth from where the sunlight is shining (when lighting is most needed). End result: This thing will only be able to reflect sunlight in the early evening and predawn hours and that's it.

#3: Eight times brighter than the moon? I know the moon isn't made of mirrors, but still, that sucker is BIG. The satellite's apparent size would have to be at least fractionally comparable to the moon as viewed from 310 miles away, which is huge.

All told, seems like hogwash to me. Far cheaper to just budget some street lights and power them with fuel oil, if need be.

Sometimes an idea seems just crazy enough to work. This isn't one of those times.

Moonlight Towers were built in Fort Wayne, IN by special order and set up in Detroit. Austin bought them secondhand. I didn't realise each arclamp "bulb" had to be changed every day.

This was also good:
