CNN noted that in the recent midterm elections the couple donated at least $112 million to Republican candidates. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to “individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” Six other people, alive and dead, will receive the top medal at a November 16 ceremony.
