U.S. to Withdraw Most Forces From Iceland By KRISTA MAHR, Associated Press Writer Thu Mar 16, 10:02 AM REYKJAVIK, Iceland - The United States, which has long provided Iceland with its only military forces, has decided to withdraw most of its service members and all of its fighter jets and helicopters from the country later this year, the U.S. ambassador said Thursday. Iceland's government, which recently had offered to take over some of the cost of its defense from the United States to keep U.S. forces here, said it regretted the decision. In an interview with The Associated Press, U.S. Ambassador Carol van Voorst said she and Nicholas Burns, the U.S. under secretary of state, had informed Iceland's Prime Minister Haldor Asgrimsson and Foreign Minister Geir H. Haarde of the unilateral decision on Wednesday. But Washington also said it would continue to honor its 1951 agreement with Iceland requiring the United States, under the auspices of NATO, to provide this country's defense. U.S. and Icelandic officials were to hold talks about how that will be done, Van Voorst said. Copyright 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. What on Earth is going on here? Iceland is the only nation America should be protecting ... yet, we are withdrawing from the brutal forces or communist corruption and terrorism that is rabid around the world.

This was just to throw people off, right? They wanted to keep their little island paradise to themselves. Actually, Greenland DID used to be green around 700 years ago, I've read.
I also named that they mis-named it on purpose. Iceland is green and Greenland is icy. They drink a lot in Iceland I also read.
So far, it seems to have been a successful ploy - and I still haven't found out about their immigration laws: but I WILL keep searching. More as google finds it.
Either of you familiar with the term culture jamming? :)

Come here and visit first, preferably in summer and then in winter as well as it like two different countries. Iceland is not perfect. It's cold and dark in winter and the summers aren't that warm either. But it has good and cheap hydro-heating in all houses, pure drinking water straight from the tap, clean air, great nature and the best fish in the world (seriously, it's hard to find as good fish as in Iceland). But the culture and traditions are very different from America (even though some things are similar) so come here first and have a look.
I'll visit Iceland once I can fit it in my budget.
