U.S. to Withdraw Most Forces From Iceland

By KRISTA MAHR, Associated Press Writer

Thu Mar 16, 10:02 AM

REYKJAVIK, Iceland - The United States, which has long provided Iceland with its only military forces, has decided to withdraw most of its service members and all of its fighter jets and helicopters from the country later this year, the U.S. ambassador said Thursday.

Iceland's government, which recently had offered to take over some of the cost of its defense from the United States to keep U.S. forces here, said it regretted the decision.

In an interview with The Associated Press, U.S. Ambassador Carol van Voorst said she and Nicholas Burns, the U.S. under secretary of state, had informed Iceland's Prime Minister Haldor Asgrimsson and Foreign Minister Geir H. Haarde of the unilateral decision on Wednesday.

But Washington also said it would continue to honor its 1951 agreement with Iceland requiring the United States, under the auspices of NATO, to provide this country's defense. U.S. and Icelandic officials were to hold talks about how that will be done, Van Voorst said.

Just in the last week I read in an English newspaper that there was some financial events in Iceland involving I think both stock market 'crash' and also currency crisis. I really wonder if that is related somehow to this story above.

Iceland is an unusual country. They only have 100,000 people. They're very isolated it seems. I think a lot of them speak English, but they have their own language also. They are very prosperous. On a per capita basis I believe they've surpassed the US as have lots of countries today. They do not allow food imports of significance it seems. They don't allow GM modified food, they don't allow female hormones in the food. They grow all their own food, or almost all.

Wow, sounds like a great place. Wonder if they allow immigration at all.

If they welcome american immigrants, then we'd probably double their population within 2-3 years.

At least - we'd probably end up looking like penguins in the antartic.

18.03.2006, 02:04 Uhr von Rut Have you ever been to Iceland? Come here and visit first, preferably in summer and then in winter as well as it like two different countries. Iceland is not perfect. It's cold and dark in winter and the summers aren't that warm either. But it has good and cheap hydro-heating in all houses, pure drinking water straight from the tap, clean air, great nature and the best fish in the world (seriously, it's hard to find as good fish as in Iceland). But the culture and traditions are very different from America (even though some things are similar) so come here first and have a look.

Also, and this is no joke, the end of something called the "yen carry trade" (ask one of the UnUsual Suspects for a more precise definition of what that is) has caused a run on the Icelandic currency in recent weeks. It may be "Weimar Iceland" before too much longer.

Webster G. Tarpley has been talking about it this afternoon on his World Crisis Radio show on RBN.
