Nielsen: 'Outrageous' That Migrants Want $50K to Go Home

(Jose Luis Magana/AP)

By Sandy Fitzgerald | Friday, 14 December 2018 10:52 AM

It's "outrageous" that migrants are demanding $50,000 each to return home if they're not allowed to enter the United States, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Friday.

"As an American, I think that’s outrageous," Nielsen told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They’ve asked us to intervene in the government of Honduras, they've demanded that Americans pay them $50,000 each and they’ve demanded that we change the way in which we do immigration and how we protect our border. These are not migrants who are seeking asylum."

Earlier this week, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that two migrant groups from Central America marched to the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana, demanding the money, that deportations be stopped and that the processing of asylum seekers be done faster.

Nielsen also shared several statistics about the immigration situation, saying that nine out of 10 illegal immigrants who are arrested already have criminal convictions or are facing pending criminal charges.

"The men and women of ICE work hard every day to secure the country despite limitations from Congress," said Nielsen. "We've seen a 10 percent increase in arrests and removals."

Another important part of the mission is stop drugs from entering the country, she said, with DHS investigators seizing nearly 900,000 pounds of narcotics being brought across the border so far this year.

She also said that the stalemate on border wall financing is a "terrible example of politics at its worst."

"Democrats have voted for the wall before," said Nielsen. "In fact they appropriated money for the wall just last year. Nothing has changed. In fact the numbers have gone up. The security risks have gone up."

Poster Comment:

The solution, of course, would be to drop helicopter money on them.

And we are forced to listen the this particular DHS Secretary who has been preceded by the likes of Tom Ridge and Michael Chertoff.

Chertoff is infamous for his "investigation" of the "terrorist attacks" on 9-11-2001.

Nielsen doesn't understand latin culture.

They demand $50k and expect a counter offer of, say, $500. Then they come down to 40k at which point the US could offer $700. Then they come down to $30k, and the US goes up to $800. Eventually, they'll agree to go for $1000 each.

But the fact that they are demanding money means they are about to give up and go home anyway. They demand money as a "just in case" the US would pay it.

Many cultures enjoy the dance of "offer, counter-offer, all day long." Not so much here in US where "take it or leave it" seems to rule.

Those people need to understand that US has more than enough government pets to support without adding any more from foreign sources.

The makers are near their breaking limit of the takers to endure.

That's absolutely correct. In the US, we are not accustomed to making offers for something once it has a price on it. Our standard options are to pay it or walk away. But in a great many undeveloped and lessor developed countries, bargaining is much more the rule. But I would take their putting a price tag on a promise to depart as an indication that they are already preparing to do it. Demanding money is an effort on their part to salvage all they've invested in the journey.

Why not? It's worth a shot.

If they'd get DNA sampled with the understanding that they could never enter this country, $5K would be a reasonable deal, imo.

You do that and you'll have half of Central America lining up to get paid.
