US President Donald Trump might retreat on his decision to pull American troops out of Syria, an American analyst says. Trump said on Thursday that US troops cannot stat in Syria "forever" and he would pull them out of the Middle Eastern country. PressTV-'Do we want to be in Syria forever?' Trump asks US President Donald Trump defends his decision to pull American troops out from Syria. James Petras, a political analyst in New York, told Press TV in an interview on Thursday that there is possibility that the troop withdrawal is not sustainable. He said taking into consideration Trump's history of going back on his moves when he meets opposition from the Pentagon and pressure from members of the Congress, especially Republicans, there is a possibility that he will contradict his earlier withdrawal announcement. Let’s wait and see if he contradicts himself, Petras said, noting that it could happens within days, or even hours. Petras said assuming that the troop withdrawal takes place, the main reason would be because of the US alliance with the Kurds on Syria’s border with Turkey. Turkey has announced that it plans to attack the Kurds occupying the Turkish border and Trump doesn’t want US forces to be in a head on collision with troops belonging to a NATO ally, Turkey, Petras said. In addition, Trump has reiterated his commitment towards focusing the nation’s energy on issues of high domestic value, i.e., rebuilding America as well as fighting the trade war with China, he said. In Petras’ view Trump also thinks that pulling US troops out of Syria would help foster a potential alliance with Russia. Russia has helped the Americans secure Syria’s borders with Israel and Saudi Arabia, the two regional allies of the US, according to Petras’ analysis. To sum up, Petras believes that if Trump does not give in to pressure from Congress and the Pentagon and pulls US troops out of Syria, he will concentrate US resources on the domestic issues.
