in Spanish? What do you call a group that claims that we should end the war on drugs, because it leads to outsourcing, while crying about the corruption of youth? Well, they call themselves Poker Face, which they probably chose, to make up for the fact that you cant help, but laugh when reviewing their politics, which they so conveniently pack into each of their albums. The first time I heard Poker Face was a few weeks back on the Hal Turner Show. The song Hal played was called, Prayer for America, which was very touching and well composed, even to someone as disconnected from American patriotism as I am. Poker Face was lined up to play at a libertarian party convention, but the venue that was hosting it rejected to let them, because they were mentioned on the Hal Turner Show in the past, which, a lot of our kind would assume makes them a tasteful group. And going with that assumption, I was more than excited when I found out their two most recent albums, Made In America (MIA) and Sex, Lies, and Politiks (SLAP), were in the mail heading to my home. If I werent such an optimistic and fun-loving person, I would now consider that excitement wasted. The first thing that struck me as I dug into the albums, was the ridiculous amount of information they packed into the album art pamphlet, as well as the cliché analogies in the drawings that compare Bush to Hitler, and both to pro-rich tyranny. I tried my best to avoid the globs of political ranting, and focus on the lyrics and the music, but, I found myself needing to dive into the center for moral clarificationalthough I found nothing, but confirmation that Poker Face is one very confused group of men. The first song on MIA is titled Kontrol, featured once in English, once in Spanish. Personally, I dont want to urge anyone who doesnt understand the English version to take back control of anything in this country. Id even go as far to say, that if I were to produce a song in Spanish and spread it to the American-area public, itd probably say something along the lines of, No jobs in America, 50 dollars is one peso, theres free cake in Africa, turn back, bring your friends and kids.. Another beef I have with this particular song, became apparent to me as I was reading down the lyrics. They imply that the singer became distraught with political injustice when he got busted for smoking pot. Well, hes certainly got his priorities straight, doesnt he? For myself, my first experience with political injustice was when I got accused of making an anti-Semitic comment during English class, although I was a liberal, communist, hippie dingbat at the time. Last time I checked, the former was illegal, and the latter wasnt. Continuing on with the drug issue, in the song Thief, also on MIA, the band speaks of some other God, that I personally infer as being big brother slash the un-American government in America. This God allows a certain group of people, who are mentioned as being associated with some other folks who are naked and drugged up, to party and rape. If you ask me, this sounds like date rape. Now, Im aware that the effects of marijuana are allegedly less dramatic than those of roofies and the sterilizing veterinary drugs rapists are using, but I dont think thats the problem at hand. It seems like Poker Face is deciding the difference between good drug use and bad drug use in terms of consent. Ill just say to this, that I have never walked by a stoned kid able to define consent, let alone tell me what color shirt I had on. 3/20/2006 Poker Face Review, part II On SLAP, one song called, Watchman goes like this, I watch the television, I read the news. I see Americas youth, learn to sing the blues. I see this stupid shit go on day after day. And I wonder when the politician will take it all away.. Despite the fact that some of Poker Faces songs are very sweet and religious and praise Jesus, I would much rather sing the blues than their newer songs that discuss drugs in a less than negative light, or any of their Spanish songs. I hate to break it to you, fellas, but the politicians arent going to take it all away any time soon, although, I do hope if they take something away, its your ganja stash and not my petite freedoms. So, they love Christ, they love pot, they think that they can solve Americas problems by mentioning Ruby Ridge and Martin Luther King Jr. on the same pagethey need to put the bong down and take a breath of fresh air while it still exists. While their political beliefs are conflicted, their music sounds fine. When you let the lyrics blur and become sounds rather than words, their sense of rhythm and harmony is a lot better than most modern bands. My favorite songs off of SLAP are Watchman and Freedom, and off of MIA, they are Thief and I Wanna Know. Its nice to hear a band for once that actually comprehends how to play their instruments, although they dont seem to comprehend much of the world outside of that. If I could make one recommendation to them, other than to disassociate themselves from drugs completely, or visit the barbershop, itd be to pick up a book or two about what happens when a nation has more than one culture or language. They obviously arent aware of exactly who hurts our country and how. __________________ We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children.
