Title: Act of gangsterism against Venezuela: Trump, Pence, Pompeo star in the Pirates of the Caribbean

You could scour the bowels of US imperial crimes, from the Mexican-American War to the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, and you won’t find a more brazen cynical act gangsterism than that which is now underway against oil-rich Venezuela.

Not since Hitler justified blitzing Poland by claiming it had encroached on the frontier into Nazi Germany has a more blatant set of falsehoods been adduced as a pretext for conflict.

In Venezuela, it will quickly become a civil war that will most likely draw in other countries from Cuba to Colombia and Brazil (as I previously predicted here) with incalculable consequences – not least for the world’s oil prices. Also on rt.com US refuses to withdraw diplomats from Venezuela after Maduro breaks ties

Discerning readers will already be aware that Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserves and is a major producer – and the biggest seller to the American market.

This is not about Maduro, the former bus driver-turned-foreign minister who is now the elected president of Venezuela. If it were, I’d waste my time critiquing his period in office. It’s not about Maduro because the US had been seeking to overthrow his predecessor Hugo Chavez for more than a decade before this. Even though Chavez was one of the most electorally successful politicians on the planet in a democratic process described by former US president Jimmy Carter as “the best in the world,” US presidents Bush, Obama and Trump routinely called him a dictator.

Before they drop the bombs, they drop the narrative, of course. And the disinformation bombardment in Venezuela has been one of the longest bombing runs in history. Massive sums of US money have been spent on media distortion, subversion, sabotage, military coups, and threats of invasion throughout the Chavez-Maduro era. The gold-toothed Venezuelan emigres who fled to Miami with their ill-gotten gains have long been effectively a coup in the making. The recruitment of neighboring Colombia into “associate membership” of NATO, the propeling of Brazil’s Bolsonaro (another NATO applicant) to power, and plans for US military bases there have all been in preparation for this day.

READ MORE: Venezuela divide: Turkey, Russia, China stand against Washington, its Latin America allies

Although many such crimes have been committed across all continents for centuries by the US, none have constituted such comic-opera gangsterism as this latest – more ‘Bugsy Malone’ than ‘The Godfather.’

An almost random figure whose name was largely unknown until this week has disdained to put himself up for election as president of the republic, instead pronouncing himself to actually be the president, and has even sworn himself in! All the “experts” on Syria, Ukraine and Russia are scrambling to studios, practicing in the taxi how to say his name.

And the “international community” recognizes Juan Guaido. This includes US, Canada and assorted American satrapies across the world. They will likely soon be joined by the so-called democratic European Union, NATO and almost certainly the UK. It is a new form, to be sure – usually the hated Latin American presidents are dead, like Allende in Chile, or have fled or been jailed before the coup de grace is delivered.

But Trump is in a hurry.

As investigations come ever closer to the Trump syndicate, as the clock ticks towards impeachment or defeat in 2020, as the war-cell of Bolton and company screech for a victory, somewhere, anywhere, it has come to this. It is a “Wag the Dog” war, and it’s coming to your screens soon – today in fact.

Venezuela is in severe need of a revolution. The economy has been destroyed by Maduro and it's enough to qualify as a crime against humanity. Venezuelans have been fleeing that country for the past few years and they get extorted on their way out by the Venezuelan military on the way and at border crossings.

Trump should certainly pull diplomats out of there as they are otherwise in danger of losing their lives. Leaving them there is asking for another Benghazi. Trump has warned Maduro of consequences if they get hurt, but if Trump doesn't recognize Maduro as the legit president, exactly who is he going to penalize if they do get hurt?

Looks like US diplomats will stay in Venezuela as a target to justify invasion and quagmire regime change.

It depends on who you ask.

Maduro was the vice president of Chavez who was a populist & socialist leader. He was unmistakenly popular. He died of cancer some years back and Maduro took over. Maduro pretty much deified Chavez and sought to religiously implement Chavezes vision of socialism without any regard to the consequences. Venezuela consequently fell into ruin. Hyperinflation took root, infrastructure crumbled crime went way up and many hundreds of thousands and more likely millions have fled the country to neighboring places creating social & economic and crime problems there.

There were official elections held last year but the main opposition protested it as unfair for various reasons and it was arguably boycotted and failed to work as a real means of measuring popular sentiment.

So according to the government, Maduro is the "real" president. According to the resistance, he is not the real president.

Pretty much how it works in any revolution.

So it's up to who has the most arms and ammo?

Is there any semblance of a civil government going on, or is it anarchy?

Thank you for keeping us posted here, and stay safe down there.

Yeah, cry me a river about Anglo piracy. Them boys have been so mean. (Wanna hanky?)

We heard it all from the enthusiasts when the regime came in pink. Many of us tried to warn them and the government morphed ever more red. Wherever socialism takes root in earnest a kleptocracy takes root, and then bit by it takes over.

Chavez' daughter is said to be the wealthiest woman in Venezuela. What is she worth? They say is it about 3 billion bucks. And what is that about?

The President of the Venezuelan Assembly says that Maduro has illegitimately been put into office by the courts, and he maintains the he is the legit head of government.

I don't know much about the constitution of that country, so maybe Gauido is right or maybe he is wrong, but the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS demonstrating in the streets of Caracas say that perhaps he has a point.

Here's hoping that we can keep our noses out of it.

Cheers.

Has Mike Pompeo chimed in at all on this? He is Secretary of state right?

From what I have read about what has been happening in Venezuela, the inflation rate is astronomical. If you go to a restaurant for a meal, there are no menus printed with permanent prices. It is a list of prices that are handwritten and clipped onto the menu so that as prices rise the strip can be easily replaced.

This sort of reminds me of seeing a One Trillion Zimbabwean dollar note.

Besides, regime change in Latin American countries is SOP. Just ask Panama and Honduras about that. ;)

Good point. I was asking who is the titular head of the state, not who's actually running it.

#14. To: Obnoxicated, extremely rich gold deposits, Russia (#9)

It's either us or the chinese.

The Russians seem to be the preferred business partner.

Coincidence? Venezuela Green Lights Russia to Mine Gold, Days Later US Attempts Overthrow

Just like in Libya, the current conflict in Venezuela is far bigger than some humanitarian crisis as they are sitting on mountains of gold and oil.

Venezuela is not a tyrannical autocracy and its crisis is NOT organic; it is a deeply divided and polarized society—which the US is exploiting for special interests.

And no, socialism alone did not create the horrific plight currently faced by the Venezuelan people. Decades of sanctions and meddling have proven to be unbelievably effective at hurling their economy into a whirlwind of chaos, collapsing their currency, and cutting them off from the rest of the world—literally starving them to death.

Make no mistake, this has likely long been the plan. As George Galloway, former 30 year member of the British Parliament noted, “before they drop the bombs, they drop the narrative, of course. And the disinformation bombardment in Venezuela has been one of the longest bombing runs in history. Massive sums of US money have been spent on media distortion, subversion, sabotage, military coups, and threats of invasion throughout the Chavez-Maduro era.”

For those who may be unaware, the proven oil reserves in Venezuela are known to be the largest in the world, totaling 297 billion barrels. In December, Caracas and Moscow signed a $5 billion investment deal to raise Venezuela’s oil production by one million barrels per day. This move was done to counter the effects of US sanctions which have been crippling the country and raised many neocon eyebrows.

What’s more, aside from their proven oil deposits, Venezuela is also known for its extremely rich gold deposits. Also in December, Caracas gave the green light to Russia to begin mining gold inside their country.

“As for Russia’s participation in gold-mining or other mining projects, Venezuela has made a wide range of interesting proposals that are currently under consideration by interested Russian operators,” the ambassador said.

Because of their rich deposits and need to subvert US sanctions and a weaponized US dollar, Venezuela has become the 25th largest holder of gold in the world making them a direct threat to the global banking system.

To think that the US interests in Venezuela are purely humanitarian is not only asinine but it blindly ignores decades of US interventionism highlighting the contrary—especially considering what happened in Libya.

I wonder what percentage the Venezuelan government will want from the Russians for the gold that is mined there?

I knew a girl from North Dakota that was in Ghana who was into gold and black diamonds. She told me the Ghanian government wanted 20% tax on all gold that was exported. It is their right after all since it is their gold. ;)

Wont be easy for them.

They were disarmed by the Chauvistas.

Most of the non-party people (the good, smart, productive, independent ones) left.

I talk to scores of Vzuelan refugees here in Panama.

I do agree it should be handled inside but can governments offer assistance?

What Trump pulled here was simply stupid and frankly disturbing.

Was he following someone's orders here, or was this his own bright idea?

Either way, it was totally unwarranted, imo.
