Six months after he washed up on a Siberian beach, John Martin III is back in the United States.

In July, Martin, an Anchorage fringe figure and homeless activist, set out from Emmonak in an attempt to sail an 8-foot dinghy across the Bering Sea. He planned to get to China to reunite with his wife and son, he said.

Two weeks into the journey, he washed up on a beach on Russia’s Chukotka Peninsula instead. He had no passport, documents or money.

He was held for months at a Siberian hospital undergoing legal proceedings. In December, he was taken to what he described as a “prison” in Moscow to await deportation, according to his website.

“After nearly six weeks in the detention center in Moscow, the Russian government deported me back to the USA,” he wrote on his website.

He arrived in Washington, D.C., on Monday. Martin III wrote that he’d be back in Alaska on Sunday.

I'll have to sleep on this one...

If he was sent back across the same general points of latitude and longitude that took him through the Bering Sea region to Siberia, I think it might possibly mean that he and his descendants thereafter could open a tax-free "Native American" casino here if they wanted to do that. /s

The Bering Sea must have been unusually calm since those crab fishermen are most always in rough seas. ;)

Some things in his past are pretty sketchy, but if he wants to live in China, and the Chinese government was ok with that, then they should have left him there. This whole situation occurred because the U.S. pulled his passport in order to force him to come home and pay child support. That’s not going to happen anyway because he was living as a homeless guy in Anchorage.

don't be surprised if they throw him in prison, a huge money-making scam if there ever was.
