Residents and officials in the city of Los Angeles, California are horrified that their city has descended into a third world hellscape of poverty and disease. The typhus outbreak raging through the city is a flea-borne disease often reserved for socialist and poverty-stricken dystopias such as Venezuela.

I think this author is confused about the origins of Typhus and which insect carries it.

Typhus is carried by lice. Typhus killed untold numbers of prisoners in the German work camps during WW II. This is the reason those camps were called "death camps". Anne Frank died of Typhus.

Germany asked the U.S. before the outbreak of war to sell them DDT to kill the lice that carried Ricksetta which causes Typhus. But the U.S. refused so they did the best they could with what they had. ;)

Typhus is a sudden severe illness caused by infection with Rickettsia bacteria.

Outbreaks of typhus tend to occur in developing countries and areas where there is poverty, homelessness, close human contact and poor sanitation.

The Rickettsia bacteria that cause typhus are carried by body lice, ticks, mites and fleas.
