The French government controls the retail prices of food?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.

The French government controls the retail prices of food?

A new law decrees French supermarkets must get greedier
The agriculture ministry is forcing retailers to raise the price of staple foods

Print edition | Business
Feb 7th 2019 | PARIS

Given that five supermarket chains control around 80% of all organised food retailing in France, the authorities there may seem justified in probing how competitive the market really is. Too competitive, apparently: on February 1st a new law forced retailers to raise prices of food staples lest consumers be unduly profiting from shops trying to lure them with good deals.

See how that works? Pretty neat, no?

Say what? Are the stores paying people to haul out groceries?

See how that works?

Actually, no.

Pretty neat, no?

I still don't understand the logic. Forgive me, I'm olde. I hope that doesn't come to a Kroger near me.

I was being ironic with those comments.

French legislature passes a law and then through their Ag Dept. retailers are forced to do thus and such. That's what I meant by "See how that works?"

Now, what French retailers are not doimg is something on the level of bait- and-switch. Rather it is just advertising and selling loss leaders - which is legit marketing in my experience. French law wants to rig the marketplace to favor the social contract as lawmakers see it.

Prolly, not so neat really.

Am I off base here, Esso?

Mine too.

No, but the a-holes demanding higher food prices are.

A problem of even greater potential peril than climate change is the rapid proliferation of assholes we encounter everywhere and at each and every turn.

Our universities and research institutes have put some of their best minds to understanding the problem with few tangible results.

For the time being, we'll jusy have to put up with the increasing crowd of assholes that seem to plague us incessantly these days.

It's the price we pay for living in this dynamic modern world.
