Ocasio-Cortez Named in New Election Complaint

By Jeffrey Rodack | Wednesday, 03 April 2019 11:52 AM

A complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission alleges Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and her campaign manager ran a “subsidy scheme” in apparent violation of campaign finance laws, Fox News is reporting.

The news network obtained a copy of the complaint prior to its Wednesday filing. The complaint claims Ocasio-Cortez and her campaign manager, Saikat Chakrabarti, oversaw a “shadowy web” of political actions committee that allowed them to raise more money than they could have legally.

The complaint was filed by conservative attorney Dan Backer of Virginia, according to Fox News. It is his second FEC complaint against her in less than a month. He has also launched the Stop the AOC Pac.

The latest complaint also alleges that a limited liability company was started to bypass federal expenditure requirements. The company is alleged to have offered Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic candidates political consulting services. The price for those services was allegedly so low the company apparently shut down before the election, Fox News reported.

Ocasio-Cortez, Chakrabarti, who is now her chief of staff, the Justice Democrats PAC, the Brand New Congress PAC and Brand New Congress LLC are named in the complaint as the overlapping entities that aimed to “subsidize cheap assistant for Ocasio-Cortez and other candidates at rates far below market value.”

Backer claims Brand New Congress was guilty of providing “in-kind” expenditures by charging candidates for a portion of the total cost of the services.
